3.DOL Starter Three Phase

This document provides instructions for an experiment on using a direct online (DOL) starter to control a 3-phase AC motor. The experiment has two parts: 1) connecting the control circuit to test the operation of start/stop buttons and contactor, and 2) connecting the main circuit from the 3-phase power supply to the motor via the contactor and overload relay. The objectives are to familiarize students with the control and main circuits of a DOL starter and how it is used to start a 3-phase AC motor. Discussions after the experiment include explaining the results, how the DOL starter operates, and the advantages and disadvantages of this starting method.

4. THEORY

A.C induction motors are traditionally started and stopped by applying

and removing the A.C supply. In some cases, a full voltage start is acceptable,
but in many situations the start current must be reduce, and the reduced
voltage starter is employed.

2
The simplest form of motor starter for the induction motor is the Direct
On Line Starter. The DOL starter comprises switch and protection relay. See
figure 1.

Figure 1

The switch may be a manually operated load break switch, but more
commonly it would be an electromagnetic contactor which can be opened by
the thermal overload relay. Typically, the contactor will be controlled by
separate start and stop buttons, and an auxiliary contact is used as a hold in
contact. i.e the contactor is electrically latched closed while the motor is
operating.

5. EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE

5.1 EXERCICE 1: CONTROL CIRCUIT

5.1.1 Connect the control circuit as show in Figure 3(a) or 3(b)

5.1.2 Take the incoming voltage from 1 of 3 line (R or Y or B) for
single phase.
5.1.3 Connect this line back to the neutral (N) by using black cable.
5.1.4 On the power supply to run the controlling circuit.
