Gradual Release of Responsibility Direct Modeling Lesson Plan Template

This lesson plan teaches 1st grade students about attributes of shapes through a game of I-Spy and by examining the attributes of graham crackers and cookies, with the goal of students being able to define attributes with 80% accuracy. The plan includes introducing vocabulary, modeling attributes, guided practice identifying attributes of food, independent practice sorting attribute blocks, and an assessment worksheet.

Gradual Release of Responsibility Direct Modeling Lesson Plan

Learner and Environmental Factors

Grade Level: 1st grade
Content Area: Mathematics

Standards (KCCRS or Your State Standards): 1.G.1 Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g.,
triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size);
build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.

Lesson Performance Objective(s): The student will know what an attribute is and be able to define the
attributes of shapes with an 80% accuracy

Materials: pencils, worksheets, vocab chart, graham crackers, cookies, and attribute blocks

Background Knowledge Required: What kind of prior knowledge is required of the students before they
engage the new information of the lesson?

Student Grouping(s): All together as a class during the We Do process and with their across the table
partners and on their own for the You Do process.

Anticipatory Set and Purpose: (The HOOK)

I-Spy game: tell the students that they need to remain quiet and raise their hand while playing the
game.

 I-Spy something with 4 sides. 2 long and 2 short. 4 vertices, (colors of the box), it has something
sticking out of the top, and it holds tissues.
 I-Spy something round, it has no sides, and no vertices, It tells us when to start something new,
and it starts our day

VOCAB

 Attributes- shape, color, size and thickness of the blocks

 Vertices- the point in which two lines meet
 Sides- the flat surfaces of an object

Introduce the Lesson:

 Today we are going to look at a few different shapes and objects to determine what their
attributes or qualities are.

Instruction:
Stage 1: Direct Modeling of the Lesson. Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR)- I DO IT.

I-SPY GAME

 We are going to play a game of I-Spy!

 Make sure to raise your hand, stay in your seat, and remain quiet while we play
 I am going to start by thinking of something I see.
 Once you know what it is, raise your hand and I will call on you.
 I-Spy something with 4 sides, 2 long, and 2 short. (list the colors of the box), it has something
sticking out of the top, it holds tissues
 I-Spy something round, it has no sides, and no vertices, It tells us when to start something new,
and it starts our day
 Now it’s your turn, I’m going to call on a few people to find something for us to guess what it is.

VOCAB CHART:

Go over what an attribute, vertices, and side is

 Attributes- shape, color, size and thickness of the blocks

 Vertices- the point in which two lines meet
 Sides- the flat surfaces of an object

EXAMPLE:
 This is a Triangle- It has 3 sides, and 3 corners

Stage 2: Guided Practice. GRR-WE DO IT.

 Did you know that food can be shapes too! You can identify attributes of food because they’re
shapes too!
 Here is a graham cracker and cookie for each of you
 Leave it laying your desk because if you take a bite your shape wont be true shape anymore!
 Look at the graham cracker
 I see that it has 4 sides
 Raise your hand if you can name an attribute of it
 Look at the cookie
 I see that it is round
 Raise your hand if you can name an attribute of it
 Do they have any attributes that are the same?

Stage 3: Independent Practice. GRR-YOU DO IT

 I’m giving each of you 5 attribute blocks

 Work with your shoulder partners to come up with what blocks have the same attributes
 You may have some that aren’t the same
 You have 5 minutes to complete this
 Once you are done we will sort them together as a class
PROVIDE Worksheet

 After closure response

Differentiation

 Make sure to ask Jace questions in order to keep him involved throughout the lesson
 He struggles with paying attention and staying on task in class.

Assessment/Evaluation:

I will assess what the students knowledge of what they have learned from the questions I ask while
giving the lesson and by the worksheet they complete. Mastery is at 80% accuracy.

Closure:

You can also sort people by their attributes

 Charlie and Kate have blonde hair but Sophia has red hair
 I have hazel eyes but Mrs. Hamilton has blue eyes

Today we talked about attributes of shapes, people, and food. Attributes are the shape, color, and
thickness of and object. Now here is a worksheet you can get started on where you sort the attributes of
each of the shapes given.
