The Odyssey Final Project English I Due Oct. 17 (A) Oct.

18 (B)

Choose the best option based on your self-assessment as a learner. These are based on standards you have learned this 9
weeks, choose the project with the standard that would best match your self-assessment.
For your final project over The Odyssey, you will create a scrapbook, or a comic book, or a series of letters to Penelope that
illustrates the journey of Odysseus and his men. You will use your “pink” handout to guide you in this task. Create at least one
paragraph for each diary entry that we completed in class; in other words, for each event in the journey, there must be at least
one paragraph in your project dedicated to it. You can use PPT or poster board.
Key here is that you PUT YOURSELF IN THE SHOES OF ODYSSEUS. You are taking on his persona, creating this as if you were
him, documenting your travels for future generations.

Part 1: The Scrapbook of Odysseus

Create a scrapbook. You can get as fancy as you want, but all details of the scrapbook must show a logical and/or artistic
connection to Greek mythology and The Odyssey. (For example, you wouldn’t put a picture of the Jonas Brothers on a page
about The Sirens because that would be an anachronism…i.e., “something out of place for a particular time period”).

The scrapbook must include for each entry:

1. At least one illustration of something that happened during that part of the journey. It can be something you drew or a
photograph from a magazine, etc. You can create more illustrations if you desire.
2. “Journaling.” You must write an entry describing what happened during that part of the journey, describing the events,
how you and your men felt during that period, and the thoughts you all had, and the lesson that was learned in each part of
the journey.
3. A map of that particular place.
RL.1.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text,
including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.

Part 2: The Odyssey Comic Book

Create a comic book. You may hand render it or use a computer to create the panels. You can get as fancy as you want, but all
details of the comic book must show a logical and/or artistic connection to Greek mythology and The Odyssey.

The comic book must include for each entry:

1. At least 10 panels, more if you so desire.
2. Each panel must contain one illustration plus dialogue.
3. Each page must reflect the events that occurred during that part of the journey, how you and your men felt during that
period, and the thoughts you all had. Think of mystery, tension, and suspense.
4. One page of your comic book must have a map of your journeys.
RL.2.5 I can analyze how the structure of a literary text creates effects such as mystery, tension, and suspense.

Part 3: Letters to Penelope

Write a series of letters from Odysseus to Penelope. There should be one letter home for each event in the journey. They
should be “bound together” somehow in a book or folder of some type so they do not get misplaced. You may hand write
them if your writing is neat and legible, or you may type them in an interesting, yet legible font (one that resembles handwriting
and is also not difficult to read). You can get as fancy as you want, but all details of the letters must show a logical and/or
artistic connection to Greek mythology and The Odyssey.

The letters must include for each entry:

1. A description of what happened during that part of the journey, including the events, how you and your men felt during
that period, and the thoughts you all had.
2. They must be addressed to Penelope and signed by Odysseus
3. Each should contain some kind of illustration, be it a map of where Odysseus is at that time, or a sketch of the place or the
people/creatures in that place.
RL.1.3 Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a
text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.
