Prerequisites:
This course at level 2 introduces students with an intermediate level of
general English to the basic skills involved in doing reading research and
writing academic essays, assignment and term papers .in English.
Each level of this course includes an intensive study of the structure of the
English language, including the essential skills of writing style, critical reading,
writing and analysis, academic vocabulary, grammatical structure and rules,
and academic verbal discussion as outlined and in accordance. Students will
critically read and evaluate various forms and types of texts including novels,
articles, informational texts and visual texts.This course is designed to
emphasize independent thought and equip students to be successful members of
an increasingly academic studies.
Rationale:
This course prepares students for entry into English -medium study and
also is ideal for students who wish to improve their scores in skills-based
examination for university entry requirements, such as the (IELTS).

Outline:
Each theme in this course contains four lessons. Each lesson has a clear
focus and purpose, as follows:
1. Vocabulary: to ensure that students understand and can recognise basic
vocabulary that will be needed for the theme.
2. Reading : to practise the reading skill; this lesson revises the skills
taught in previous themes.
3. Writing : to practise writing skills.
4. Learning new skills: to highlight specific reading and writing skills.
5. Applying new skills: to apply skills learnt in lesson 3 to a new text-
usually a parallel text to that in lesson 2.

General objectives:
This course prepares students for entry into English -medium study and
also is ideal for students who wish to improve their scores in skills-based
examination for university entry requirements, such as the (IELTS).
A) The course Objectives for Reading and Vocabulary
This course will develop the students’ ability to
• skim for main idea(s)
• scan for details
• use graphic organizers to better understand a text
• develop reading speed
• build academic vocabulary
• make use of contextual clues to infer meanings of unfamiliar words from
context
• summarize and paraphrase information in a text
• distinguish main ideas from specific details
• distinguish facts from opinions
• make inferences and predictions based on comprehension of a text
• identify author’s purpose and tone
• discuss and respond to content of the text orally and in writing
• utilize digital literacy tools to develop reading and vocabulary skills
• reflect on and evaluate learning and performance, and set goals for
progress
• demonstrate behavior and attitudes appropriate to a university
environment (work collaboratively, manage time, be prepared, comply
with academic integrity rules)

B) Course Objectives Writing and Grammar


This course will develop the students’ ability to
• write effective and coherent paragraphs
• comprehend the overall and internal organization of an academic essay
• write an effective thesis statement
• use pre-writing strategies to plan writing
• generate ideas from sources to develop content
• develop coherent content and support with relevant details
• write a 4-5 paragraph expository/take-a-stand academic essay

• give critical peer feedback


• use peer and teacher feedback to edit writing
• build academic vocabulary
• use a variety of accurate sentence structures
• use grammatical structures accurately

• reflect on and evaluate learning and performance, and set goals for progress
• demonstrate behavior and attitudes appropriate to a university environment (work
collaboratively, manage time, be prepared, comply with academic integrity rules)

Educational Strategies and Methods (Lecture, Seminar, Practical….etc):


- Use teaching formats such as discussion groups that encourage the
participation of all students and help identify areas where students are
having difficulties.
- Provide learning materials in different formats (written, online, audio,
video podcast etc) to support key concepts/knowledge. Particularly at the
start of a programme/module or for key areas, providing online or hard
copy notes before classes can aid comprehension and accessibility.
- Include inquiry based learning exercises in international or intercultural
contexts.
- Setting up tasks, use of visual , pronounciation , comparing answers in
pairs, monitoring, feedback, conformation and correction, highlighting
grammar and self- checking.
