Structural Analysis I Moment Distribution Method Examples

This document contains two examples of using the moment distribution method to analyze structures. [1] The first example analyzes a simple beam structure and calculates the moments at each joint when given the stiffness coefficients and displacement factors. [2] The second example analyzes a continuous beam structure and similarly calculates the moments at each joint. [3] Both examples illustrate the process of setting up and solving the equations using the moment distribution method to determine the internal forces in each member.

Example 1:

Using the moment‐distribution method, determine the moments at the ends of each member.  Draw
the moment diagram. Let E = 29,000 ksi.  The moment of inertia of each member is shown on the figure
above. Assume the joint at B is rigid, C is pinned, and A is fixed.

Using  the  moment‐distribution  method,  determine  the  moments  acting  at  the  ends  of  each
member.  Draw  the  moment  diagram.  Assume  joints  A  and  D  are  pin  supported  and  C  is  rigid.
