Laser Beam Machining
Laser Beam Machining
Abstract
The word laser is an acronym for “Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of
Radiation” The laser beam machining in general with special emphasis on applications of short
and ultra short lasers in laser beam machining the trend is to apply optical sensors for process
control. Laser surface treatment is mostly used to apply corrosion wear resistant layers, but also
for repair of engine and machine parts. In micro-machining, shorter pulses reduce heat-affected
damage of the material and opens new ways for nanometer accuracy.
The driving force is higher accuracy at reasonable cost, which is realized by compact systems
delivering short laser pulses of high beam quality. Another trend is the shift towards shorter
wavelengths, which are better absorbed by the material and which allows smaller feature sizes to
be produced.
Laser-assisted machining uses primarily laser power to heat the local area before the material
is removed. It not only efficiently reduces the cutting force during the manufacturing process but
also improves the machining characteristics and accuracy with regard to difficult-to machine
materials. The prediction of relative deformations between the cutting tool and work piece is
important to improve the accuracy of machined components.
Laser machines are able to cut intricate shapes and weld with great precision. Laser has a
good life expectancy due to absence of dynamic forces and metal to metal contact during the
cutting process. There are two types of laser commonly in use in manufacturing today, the CO2
and neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd -YAG).used by thermal effects in the laser-
assisted machine tool using finite element method.
