Assignment No.2

The farmers were tasked with clearing 2 hectares of land for cassava farming. Based on average manual work rates: 1) It would take the 4 farmers 16 days to clear bushes and scrubs, consuming 3.2-4.8 KW-hr of power. 2) Ridging the land would take 22 days, consuming 3.2-8 KW-hr of power. 3) Planting cassava would be completed in 14 days, using 1.6-2.4 KW-hr of power. The document provides work rates, power consumption ranges, and calculations to determine the number of days and power needed for each task.

Assignment no. 2

Problem: Four farmers cooperatively take care of a 2 hectare farm that was awarded to them
through the Agrarian Reform Program of the government. Initially, they have to clear the land
of bushes and shrubs/scrubs, make ridges before finally planting cassava. How many days
would they need to complete each tasks? How much power would be consumed in every
activity (KW-hr)? Assume that the farmers work 8 hrs a day including rest periods. State all
other assumptions. Indicate your sources.

Given:

 Man Power = 4 Farmers

 Land Area = 2 ha
 Crops to be planted = Cassava

Operation Average manual work rate Gross Power consumed

(man days/ha) (Watts)
Clearing bushes and scrubs 32.6 400 – 600
Ridging (cassava) 43.8 400 – 1000
Planting (cassava) 28.3 200 – 300

Assumptions:

 All farmers are male

 Farmers work 8 hrs a day including rest period
 First operation must be finished first before proceeding to next operation
Required:

 Days needed to complete each tasks

 Power consumed in every activity in KW-hr
Solution:
Days needed to complete tasks
Operation Average manual Work rate for 2 ha Work rate with 4
work rate (man days) farmers (man days)
(man days ha)
Clearing bushes and 32.6 65.2 16.3 or 16
scrubs
Ridging (cassava) 43.8 87.6 21.9 or 22
Planting (cassava) 28.3 56.6 14.15 or 14
Solution:

Power consumed in every activity in KW-hr

Operation Gross Power needed Gross Power KW/hr Consumed
(W) (KW) (8 hrs working day)

Clearing bushes and 400 – 600 0.4 – 0.6 3.2 – 4.8

scrubs
Ridging (cassava) 400 – 1000 0.4 – 1 3.2 – 8
Planting (cassava) 300 – 300 0.2 – 0.3 1.6 – 2.4
