Letter of Motivation

Dear Dr. Eike Kiltz,

I am a student of final year, of integrated B.S.-M.S. course at Indian Institute of Science

Education and Research, Pune India. Here I am doing my major in Mathematics. I would like to
submit my candidature for the PhD position at University of Bochum, Germany under your guidance. I
expect that the PhD position will contribute enormously to my future research-career plans. This degree
would help me to start my career as a research scientist preparing me to work both in a team as well as
to carry on my independent research work.

Cryptography as a research field always fascinated me a lot. My area of interest is public Key
Cryptography. In my third year I did implementation of RSA and Knapsack Cryptosystem in Matlab. I also
have studied nonlinear dynamics which helped me a lot to know about the area of Chaotic Cryptography
and I have also done implementation of one Chaotic Cryptosystem in Matlab. In my fourth year I did
one project on parallel programming for solving nonlinear differential equations. In last semester I did
one project in threshold Visual Cryptography Schemes. I have also done one summer project in core
mathematics, in the field of abstract algebra. I have given, all the details about my project work in my
Curriculum-Vitae. I suppose that these things would be able to give a good picture of my background in
mathematics and Cryptography, which is your requirement for the ph.d. Position.

At present, I am involved in my master thesis with the topic “An implementation oriented overview of
code based Cryptography” at Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata, under the guidance of Prof Bimal K.
Roy(www.isical.ac.in/~bimal/). This thesis mainly focuses on the code based public key Cryptography. In
my thesis work we are going to implement McEliece cryptosystem and Niederreiter Cryptosystem in C
programming. To complete this project my mathematical background and knowledge of Cryptography
helped me a lot.

All the details given above will be enough to give you an idea about my interest in the field of
cryptography and my eligibility for this post. I would also like to mention that I am highly motivated
towards this field and your guidance could be a great addition in my research carrier. For more details
about my interest in this field you can contact to my referee who was a great advisor for me in this field.

As University of Bochum, Germany has important research activities in this area, I would like to be given
the opportunity to be part of one of its prestigious research groups. I am sure that my passion to Public
Key Cryptography along with my skills, knowledge and competence would make me a valuable member
of your research team. Hence, I would appreciate if you could consider my application for developing a
PhD in Sustainable Development at University of Bochum and I look forward to hearing from you.

With Regards

Kapil Kumar Gupta
