Volume Density Notes Weebly

1) The document discusses volume, density, and how to calculate them. Volume is the amount of space an object takes up and can be found by multiplying length x width x height for regularly shaped objects or using water displacement for irregular objects. 2) Density is a measure of mass per unit volume and can be calculated by dividing an object's mass by its volume. The densities of different materials determine if they will float or sink in water. 3) Examples are provided for calculating volume and density of regularly and irregularly shaped objects using given dimensions and masses.

UNIT 1: MECHANICS 1

Volume & Density Notes

Volume
Definition: is the amount of space an
object takes up.
Notes: There are 3 different types of
objects to measure volume for
■ Regularly Shaped Objects
■ Liquids
■ Irregularly Shaped Objects
Volume (Regularly Shaped Objects)
Units: the SI unit of volume is cubic
meter (m3)

We can measure the volume of

9 cm regular object using the formula
length x width x height.

8 cm _____ X _____ X _____ = _____

10 cm
Volume Practice (Regularly Shaped
Objects)
Volume (Liquids)
We will be using graduated cylinders to find
X the volume of liquids and other objects.

Y
Read the measurement based on the bottom
of the meniscus or curve. When using a real
cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the
Z level of the liquid.
What is the volume of water in the cylinder?
_____mL
What causes the meniscus?
A concave meniscus occurs when the
molecules of the liquid attract those of the
container. The glass attracts the water on
the sides.
Volume Practice (Liquids)
Volume (Irregularly Shaped Objects)
Measuring an Irregularly Shaped Object: You can
determine the volume of an irregularly
shaped solid by measuring the volume of water
that the object displaces.

We can measure the volume of

irregular object using water displacement:

Amount of H2O with object = ______

About of H2O without object = ______

Difference = Volume = ______

Density
Definition: a measure of how much
mass occupies a given space.
Units: the SI units for density is
kilogram per cubic meter (kg/m3)
■ 1g=1ml=1cm3

mass
Formula: Density = volume
Density
Notes:
■ The density of a substance is the relationship
between the mass of the substance and how much
space it takes up (volume).
■ The mass of atoms, their size, and how they are
arranged determine the density of a substance.
■ Objects with the same volume but different mass
have different densities.
■ Solids are often very dense and gases have very low
densities.
■ Remember: The density of water is 1 g/ml
Density Practice

What is the
density of the
cuboid, if its mass
is 4 kg?
