CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER

Ans: A Computer is an advanced electronic machine, which accepts Data as input, process it, store it and produce
output.

Ans: Data is a collection of raw facts and figures, given to computer for processing.

Ans: Information is the processed or meaningful Data that is understandable by a person.

Ans: Process is action that is performed on Data to convert it to Information.

Ans: Computers have become essential part of our life due to these features: High Speed, Accuracy, High Power of
Remembering things and versatility.

Ans: The physical parts or components of the computers that we see and touch is known as Hardware e.g. keyboard,
mouse etc

Q NO (7) What is software?


Ans: Software is the set of instructions given to computer for performing specific task. Software enable the user to
interact with computer. e.g. Ms Windows, Ms Office etc

Q NO (8) How many group of Hardware Components of Computer are?


Ans: The Computer Hardware components can be divided into these groups.
(a) Input Devices.
(b) Output Devices.
(c) System Unit.
(e) Storage Devices.
(f) Communication Devices.

Ans: Input devices are used to enter data or instruction into the computer like keyboard, mouse etc

Q NO (10) Explain briefly some input devices?


Ans: There are following input devices
(1) Keyboard is used to enter data into computer; there are 102-105 keys are on it
(2) Mouse is used to input instructions with a pointer on the screen, it is also called pointing device
(3) Scanner is used to input printed documents and images into the computer
(4) Microphone is used to input human voice or any other sound into the computer

Q NO (11) Define Output devices?


Ans: The output devices show the information or result which is obtained from computer after processing.

Q NO (12) Explain briefly some output devices?


Ans: There are following output devices.
(1) Monitor: Monitor is Output device; it is just like T.V and also known as VDU (Video Display Unit)
(2) Printer: Printer is also Output device that produce the output on paper.
(3) Speaker: Speaker is that kind of Output device that produces sound Output.

Q NO (13) Define System unit?


Ans: System unit is the main unit of computer. It is a rectangular box containing memory, processor etc

Q NO (14) What are the parts of System Unit?


Ans: System unit consist of following parts.
(1) Processor performs all types of processing on data to produce results; it is main part of system unit
(2) Mother Board is the main circuit board in system unit. It is also called system board.
(3) Memory is used to store Data that is used by processor for different tasks. It is essential part of a computer.

Q NO (15) Explain briefly storage devices?


Ans: Storage devices are use to keep the data and programs stored permanently so that available for later
(1) Hard Disk is permanent storage device. Magnetic plates are used to store Data in Hard Disk.
(2) Floppy Disk is removable storage device. It is used to transfer Data form one computer to another.
(3) CD / DVD are soft plastic made storage disks.
(4) USB is also removable storage device.

Q NO (16) Define Communication devices.


Ans: Devices which are used to transfer information from on computer to another are called communication devices

Q NO (17) What is modem? .


Ans: Modem is communication device use to connect the computers to the internet.

Q NO (18) How Computer works?.


Ans: Computer works according to following order.
(1st) Input Operation: Data is entered into computer using input device e.g. keyboard, mouse
(2nd) Processing Operation: Processor or CPU performs calculation or processing.
(3rd) Output Operation: Results produced by the processor is sent to the Output device like monitor
(4th) Storage Operation: Data is stored by storage devices

Ans: Operating System is system software which is used to control and coordinate all the activities of computer. e.g.
Windows XP,

Ans: The Desktop is the first screen that appears when the computer is turned on and contains icons of software.

Q.No.(3) Explain Desktop Icons?


Following Icons are available on Desktop.
(1) My Document: It consists of stored documents and files.
(2) My Computer: It provides access to avail resource of computer.
(3) Recycle Bin: It stores all deleted documents or files.
(4) Internet Explorer: It uses to access internet.

Q.No. (4) How you will open a program in computer?


Ans: Suppose we are going to open MS paint in computer, we will adopt following procedure.
 Start  Program  Accessories  MS Paint
Similarly a file can be open by double clicking on its icons.

Q.No. (5) How do you understand a Window?


Ans: A Window is a rectangular area on screen, each program opens in its specific window,

Ans: If you open a window of any program, then following parts will be avail in each type of window
(1) Title Bar: It contains the name of current program.
(2) Menu Bar: It contains different menu like file, edit, help etc.
(3) Tool Bar: It contains button with icons for common tasks.
(4) Status Bar: It displays the information of running program
(5) Scroll Bar: It uses to navigate through windows or document contents.
(6) Maximize Button: It enlarges window to its maximum size.
(7) Minimize Button: It uses to reduce a window on task bar
(8) Close Button: It uses to close the active window.

Ans: A file is the collection of related information. e.g text file, audio/video file. A name is given to each file

Ans: A folder is tool for organizing and grouping files on Disk. It contains files and also called Directory.

Q.No. (9) What is Drive?


Ans: A Drive is a storage device in computer to store and retrieve information. e.g Hard Disk, CD/DVD etc.
Drives are named with alphabets like C, D, E. All drives in computer can be viewed by My Computer.

Ans: Following procedure will be adopt for creating a folder
 Right click where folder is required  New  Folder  Give the name of folder

Ans: Delete command is use to delete or erase a file or folder, you can do it as

Ans: To open MS paint in computer, we will adopt following procedure.
 Click Start Button  Click All Programs  Click Accessories  Click Ms Paint

Ans: Following components are available in MS Paint window,

Ans:Typing tutor is application software. We can improve typing with the help of typing tutor software.

Ans: Keyboard is input device used to enter data into computer. There are about 101-105 keys are on it.
Commonly used keyboard is known as QWERTY, QWERTY define the arrangements of keys
There are 4 types of keys are on keyboard. Function keys, numeric keys, alpha-numeric and cursor control key
Typing speed is measured in WPM or CPM

Ans: We will open Ms Word by the following procedure

Ans: When you open MS Word, its window consist of these components

Ans: There are two different methods for selecting a text from MS Word document, by keyboard and by mouse
By Keyboard you can select the text as
1) Place the cursor before or after the text to be selected
2) Press the appropriate arrow key until the text is highlighted
By Mouse you can select the test as
1) Place the cursor before or after the text to be selected
2) Hold down left click of mouse and drag the mouse on text to be selected
Note: if you want to select the whole document then press Ctrl+A

Ans:
(1) Select the text either by mouse or keyboard.
(2) Right click on selected text and click on copy.
(3) Right click on the area where you want to paste it.
(4) Click paste, hence text will be pasted to new place.

Q. No. (13) How you will delete text in MS Word?


Ans:
There are 3 different methods to delete the text in word
1) Place the cursor on left side of text to be deleted and press BACKSPACE key until the text removed
2) Place the cursor on right side of text to be deleted and press DELETE key until the text removed.
3) Select the text to be deleted by mouse or keyboard and press DELETE or BACKSPACE key.

Ans: Font means a complete character set of a single size and style of a particular typeface.
Typeface is physical appearance of characters. Formatting tool bar is use to change these characters
You can change font name, font size and can do Bold, Italic, under line and align the text left, right etc

Ans: Select the text by keyboard or mouse and click FONT in formatting tool bar to change the Font of text.

Ans: Text can be written in lower case, upper case, sentence case, title case, and toggle case.

Ans: Select the text  Format Menu  change case  select the desire option
