8 Solid Modeling
A cantilever beam is given which is supported at one end. Data given as follows:
Cross section= 150 mm X 150 mm, Length= 1000 mm, Tip load= 500 N
Modulus of Elasticity= 2 X105 N/mm2, Poisson’s ratio= 0.28 and Density= 7.83 X 10-7 kg/m3
Analytical deflection formula= PL3/3EI
Find deflection in Y- Direction, Lot Von Mises and Y- component of stress.
Exercise – 2: Analysis of 2-D Truss- 1
A simple 2-D truss is given which is given as in figure. Analyze the same, and calculate
nodal reactions and displacements. Data given as follows:
The cross-sectional area of all members is equal to 1500 mm2. Assume E = 205 kN/mm2.
A tapered thin plate, made of steel (E= 2 X 105 MPa, ρ= 7800 kg/m3) has a length of 500 mm
and thickness of 20 mm. its width is 180 mm at the fixed end and 80 mm at the free end. In
addition to its self weight, it is subjected to a point load of kN at a distance of 300 mm from
the fixed end. Model the plate with two spar elements and determine:
(a) Nodal displacements
(b) Stresses in each element and
(c) Reaction forces at the supports
Exercise – 5: Analysis of Stepped Plate Section
Analyze the stepped section as shown in figure and calculate force, stress and stress in the
different sections of a stepped bar.
Exercise – 6: Analysis of 2-D Plate Section
A rectangular plate, with dimensions 200 mm X 100 mm X 20 mm, is having a central hole
punched of 20 mm diameter. 1 MPa pressure is applied on the right edge of the plate. The left
edge of the plate is fixed.
Take Young’s modulus = 200000 N/mm2 and Poisson’s ratio = 0.3
Exercise – 7: Analysis of 2-D Bracket
This bracket is to be built from a 20 mm thick steel plate. This bracket will be fixed at the
two small holes on the left and have a load applied to the larger hole on the right as shown
below.
Take Young’s modulus = 200000 N/mm2 and Poisson’s ratio = 0.3.
Exercise – 8: Solid Modeling Practice - 1
