This document proposes incorporating the KidPub online publishing site into a 2nd grade language arts lesson to address writing standards. Students will write and publish original pieces recounting a favorite memory. They will then read and provide feedback on three classmates' writings. Required technologies include classroom computers or rotating use of the media center computers. The lesson allows for collaboration, student-centered learning through original writing and feedback, and publishing work for others.

Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Author’s Tea!

Content Area: Language Arts
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE2W6: With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of tools to
produce and publish writing, including digital tools and collaboration with peers.

Technology Standard Addressed: 5. Computational Thinker. b. collect data or identify relevant data sets,
use digital tools to analyze them, and represent data in various ways to facilitate problem-solving and
decision-making

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: KidPub

URL(s) to support the lesson: www.kidpub.com

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
I plan to incorporate this online publishing company into a Language Arts Writing lesson. With this particular
standard students are required to create an original piece and publish it to a forum available to their peers to
view. For this particular lesson students will be recounting their favorite memory in great detail! It can be
anything from a ball game to Christmas morning, or even just the first day of school.

After their pieces have been drafted, edited, and revised they will work with the teacher to publish their
writing. On top of publishing their work on KidPub they must also leave a compliment and a criticism on three
other students writings. The children will be expected to professionally state their opinion/guidance for their
peers.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Students will be able to use a class set of computers, or rotate using the computers in the media center.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will be sharing their writing with peers all around the world, along with reading and
commenting on various stories they read written by other students in or outside the classroom.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): The students will be creating their own original piece of
writing and will also be coming up with original feedback to give peers.

c. Higher-order thinking: The students will be pulling from their own creative motivations as they place
us in the middle of their favorite memory.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Students will
be reading and publishing work that is interesting to them and their veiwers.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Allowing students access to a forum that lets them view other student’s work they will be able to have
content examples as to what is expected from their work. Sometimes the main idea is hard to grasp from a
rubric or directions list, but actually seeing the rubric in action can fill in a lot of gaps for the kids.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

This website does not ask for any personal information from the students, including their names- rather it
asks the students to come up with their own pseudonym. On top of that, as it will be required for teacher
review for submitting I can double check that no student is using their real name. KidPub also provides a
parent waiver that can be sent home, allowing their students work to be published in the first place.

Reflective Practice:
I feel the activities implemented in this lesson will impact not only student creativity but also student
confidence. The students will be able to creatively express themselves through an outlet of writing. Seeing
their pieces published and read on a real website will give them confidence and a sense of pride in their work.
To further extend this lesson students could build off of the comments they receive on their writings and
improve them even more. For students who struggle with language, they can first practice telling their stories
in oral format- recording it on a podcast application such as Audacity and translating to paper from there.
