ERIK ERIKSON THEORY

PRENATAL

During her pregnancy to little bear, Mama Bear had a regular Prenatal Check-up. She is
also well-nourished. Mama Bear did not have any emotional problems throughout pregnancy.

INFANCY (BIRTH TO 18 MONTHS) (Trust vs Mistrust)

TRUST

 Feel safe and secure in the world


 Realistic trust of self and others
 Confidence in others
 Optimism and hope
 Shares openly with others
 Relates to others effectively

MISTRUST

 Fear and belief that the world’s inconsistent and unpredictable


 Feeling of worthlessness
 Suspiciousness/testing of others
 Fear of criticism and affection
 Dissatisfaction and hostility
 Projection of blame and feelings

ACHIEVED: Trust. All needs during infancy are well-provided. During this
period, her mother was her constant caregiver. Little Bear easily trust all the
people surrounding her, especially, with her relationships with opposite sex.

TODDLER (18 MONTHS to 3 years old) (Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt)

AUTONOMY

 Secure and confident


 Realistic self-concept and self-esteem
 Self-control and will power
 Pride and a sense of goodwill
 Simple cooperative

SHAME AND DOUBT

 Sense of inadequacy(self-doubt)
 Self-doubt/self-consciousness
 Dependence on others for approval
 Sense of being out of control
 Feeling of being exposed/attacked

ACHIEVED: Autonomy.Little Bear was being toilet trained at the age of 2.


Eventhough she still living together with her parents, she provides her needs
using her own income. As observed, she had developed a confidence towards
herself.

PRESCHOOL (3 to 6 years old) (Initiative vs Guilt)

INITIATIVE

 Feel capable and able to lead others


 An adequate conscience
 Appropriate social behaviour
 Curiosity and exploration
 Sense of direction
 Original and purposeful activities
GUILT

 Sense of guilt, self-doubt, lack of initiative


 Passivity and apathy
 Avoidance of activities and pleasures

 Reluctance to show emotions
 Underachievement of potential

ACHIEVED: Initiative. During her pre-school, she is sometimes the leader of


the game and very sociable to her playmates. As observed, during our activities,
she’s able to share her ideas and initiates actions such as making cheers and
intermission numbers.

SCHOOL AGE (6 to 12 years old) (Industry vsInferioty)

INDUSTRY

 Feeling of competence and belief in their skills

 Completion of projects
 Pleasure in effort and effectiveness
 Ability to cooperate and compromise
 Joy of involvement in the world and with others

INFERIORITY

 Doubt their ability to be successful

ACHIEVED: Industry. During school-age, Little Bear excels in her


academic performance and is also active in extra-curricular activities such as
Girl Scouts. According to Papa Bear, they praise and appreciate their
children’s achievements. Today, she is now engaged to direct selling and able
to earn salary.

ADOLESCENCE (12 to 18 years old) (Identity vs Role Confusion)

IDENTITY

 Strong sense of self and a feeling of independence


 Emotional stability
 Commitment to career planning and realistic long term goal
 Sense of having a place in society
 Establishing relationship with the opposite sex
 Fidelity to friends
 Development of personal values

ROLE CONFUSION

 Insecure and confused about themselves and future


 Lack or giving up of goals, belief, values, productive roles
 Feeling of confusion, indecision
 Short-term relationship with the opposite sex

ACHIEVED: Role Confusion.In her adolescence stage, Little Bear


developed shyness and fear of crowd. She had a short term relationship with
opposite sex. She even shifted courses and schools frequently during college
days. Little Bear achieved “Role Confusion”.

YOUNG ADULTHOOD (18 to 30 years old) (Intimacy vs Isolation)

INTIMACY

 Develop relationship that are committed and secure


 Ability to give and receive to love
 Commitments and mutuality with others
 Sacrificing for others
 Collaboration in work

ISOLATION

 Less committed relationship and are more likely to suffer


emotional isolation, loneliness and depression
 Emotional distance in all relationships

ACHIEVED: Isolation. In the initial stage, Little Bear experienced


numerous of love affairs during her young adulthood. But her last relationship
end up with violence that triggers her depression.

ADULTHOOD (30 to 65 years old) (Generativityvs Stagnation)

GENERATIVITY

 Feel that they are contributing to the world by being active in their
home and community
 Productive, constructive and creative activity
 Personal and professional growth
 Parental and social responsibilities
STAGNATION

 Feel unproductive and uninvolved in the world


 Self-centeredness
 Exaggerated concern for appearance and possessions
 Lack of interest in the welfare of others
 Lack of professional/responsibilities

ACHIEVED: Stagnation. In this stage, our client was not able to have
family on her own, even to have a stable job until present.

frequently shifting courses and school, flirting with guys, blank stare
and difficulty of sleeping
