CHAPTER III
WEB APPLICATION FOR NETWORK MONITORING
A. General Theory
A web application is a computer program that utilizes web browsers
and web technology to perform tasks over the Internet.
13
14
B. Software Required
The software needed is:
1. Web Server
The primary function of a web server is to store, process and
deliver web pages to clients. The communication between client and server
takes place using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Pages delivered
are most frequently HTML documents, which may include images, style
sheets and scripts in addition to text content.
2. PHP
PHP is a server scripting language, and a powerful tool for making
dynamic and interactive Web pages.
PHP code may be embedded into HTML or HTML5 markup, or it
can be used in combination with various web template systems, web
content management systems and web frameworks. PHP code is usually
processed by a PHP interpreter implemented as a module in the web server
or as a Common Gateway Interface (CGI) executable. The web server
software combines the results of the interpreted and executed PHP code,
which may be any type of data, including images, with the generated web
page. PHP code may also be executed with a command-line interface
(CLI) and can be used to implement standalone graphical applications.
16
3. Database Server
A database server is a computer system that provides other
computers with services related to accessing and retrieving data from a
database. Access to the database server may occur via a "front end"
running locally a user's machine (e.g. phpMyAdmin), or "back end"
running on the database server itself, accessed by remote shell. After the
information within the database is retrieved it is outputted to the user
requesting the data.
A database is a large quantity of indexed digital information. It can
be searched, referenced, compared, changed or otherwise manipulated
with optimal speed and minimal processing expense.
3.4 phpMyAdmin
5. Browser
Note that a web browser is not the same thing as a search engine,
though the two are often confused. For a user, a search engine is just a
website, such as google.com, that stores searchable data about other
websites. But in order to connect to and display websites on their device, a
user needs to have a web browser installed.
C. Project Design
1. Software Required
For the program to run, the server must be installed on computer
by installing required software.
a. XAMPP
XAMPP is a free and open source cross-platform web server
solution stack package developed by Apache Friends, consisting
mainly of the Apache HTTP Server, MariaDB database, and
interpreters for scripts written in the PHP and Perl programming
languages.
18
b. Sublime Text
Sublime Text is a proprietary cross-platform source code editor
with a Python application programming interface (API). It natively
supports many programming languages and markup languages, and
functions can be added by users with plugins, typically community-
built and maintained under free-software licenses.
