Ommittee On Ealth Ouncil of The Istrict of Olumbia
As fall begins here in the District of Columbia the Committee on Health and the Council are gearing up
for the final legislative session of Council Period 18.
In the first legislative meeting following the summer recess Councilmember Catania along with
Councilmembers Wells and Cheh presented a ceremonial resolution marking September as “Ovarian
Cancer Awareness Month” in the District of Columbia. This coincides with Councilmember Catania’s
efforts to turn the John A. Wilson building teal in honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Members
of Rhonda’s Club and the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance were on hand to receive the resolution and
speak candidly about the need for greater awareness throughout the District. Though on the decline,
death rates from ovarian cancer remain high because the symptoms of the disease are so subtle and
currently no definitive screening test exists. For more information about ovarian cancer, ways to
identify the symptoms, early screening, and the efforts of these groups please visit
www.rhondasclub.org or www.ovariancancer.org.
• Concerned about the health of loved ones, then take part in Tom Joyner’s “Take a Loved One to
the Doctor Day” this Tuesday September 28, 2010. See the attached pages for details.
• This week is “DC Goes Blue Week for Colon Cancer,” please see the attached information or visit

“DC Goes Blue for Colon Cancer Awareness Week”
• During the week of September 26 through October 3, 2010, Washington, DC joins the national
“Cities Go Blue for Colon Cancer” tour. The goals of this campaign, sponsored by the Colon
Cancer Alliance, are to (1) create a call to action by advocating early screening; (2) increase
awareness about colon cancer; (3) promote the resources available for information and support
from the Colon Cancer Alliance and their partner organizations; and (4) to reach those
communities that are disproportionately affected by colon cancer.
• The Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) is the oldest and largest national patient advocacy organization
dedicated to ending the suffering caused by colorectal cancer. In order to increase rates of
screening and survivorship, the CCA provides patient support, public education, supports
research and conducts advocacy work across America.
