Lesson 1- Day 1

Learning to Add with Place Value

Kjersti Clayton - May 31, 2018

1
Objective
Students will be able to solve at least 2 out of 3 two-digit addition problems using their
place value strategy given to them in an exit ticket.

Time
60 minute total session broken up into 15 minute mini lesson and three 15 minute center
rotations.

Materials
• Base ten blocks
• Base ten mats
• Whiteboards (large and individual)
• Ipads for each student or partners
• QR code reader app
• Number Pieces app
• Pencils
• Expo Markers
• 4 eight sided dice (enough for each student)
• Copies of worksheets (see appendix A)

Mini Lesson
Gather students in one area (preferably around a whiteboard). With different double
digit addition problems show students how to use place value to solve, using the following
steps.
The first number in the equation goes at the top of a base ten chart, ones in the ones
place, tens in the tens place and so on. Make sure to draw the number as base ten blocks.
Then the second number goes under the numbers from the first. Next, look at the ones place
and add up all the ones. Can you
make a group of ten? If no, then write
the total below. If yes, circle ten ones
and move them to the tens place by
drawing in an arrow. Then draw a
new ten in the tens place. Then, write

2
the total ones left below. Moving on to the tens place follow the same procedure. Can you
make a group of one hundred? if no then write the total below. If yes then circle 10 tens and
move them to the hundreds place. Write the total of the tens that are left. Repeat with the
hundreds place. The answer to the problem is found written at the bottom.
Give students their own problem and have them try it themselves using this strategy.
Help answer any questions the students may have. Then as a group solve the same equation,
this time with student help.

Center Rotations
After the mini lesson students will rotate between 3 different centers (15 minutes each).
Divide the students into 3 groups: low, medium, high. These groups may change throughout
the unit as students show progression and understanding or struggle.

Center 1: QR codes
Previous to the lesson cut out the QR codes and the equations. Tape them around the
room. With the worksheet provided (see appendix A) students need to go around the
classroom to each equation. Using their new strategy they need to solve the problems. When
finished they can check their answers. If they get the answer wrong, students need to try and
find their mistake in their strategy.
Center 2: Place value practice
Students will use 4 eight sided dice to create an addition problem. Students then will
use their choice of manipulative to solve the problem. They have the choice of place value
mat or the Number Pieces app. Students need to solve each problem using their new strategy
and then create a new problem when finished.
Center 3: Teacher
Students will be working with he teacher at this station. Each student will have a
whiteboard and expo marker. The teacher will give students a problem to solve. Students
need to use their strategy to solve. The teacher needs to help students work through the
problems and the parts that they are stuck on. If students finish early, they need to teach their
partner how they solved it.

Assessment

3
Students need to show that they can solve 2 out of 3 problems using their Place value
strategy. This will help you make any changes to your groupings for centers, as well as know
if more time needs to be taken on teaching or if the class is ready to move on. (see appendix
B)

4
Appendix A
Cut out each QR code with corresponding Letter and place around the room. Have students go the
each and solve the equation. They can check their answer using the QR code. Students can show
their work on the worksheet provided.
A 34 + 72

B 27 + 25

C 48 + 82

D 54 + 17

5
E 93+ 26

Name___________________________
Go around the room and find the equation. Solve the problem showing your work. Then scan the QR
code to check your answer.
