EDITOR’S LETTER

The colours we use in our homes have a strong effect on how we feel, they
affect our mood and our well being. We even talk about colour using phrases
such as green with envy, Black Wednesday, red rag to a bull, feeling blue, seeing
things through rose-tinted glasses and so on. But is it down to conditioning, the
way girls like pink and boys blue or red or is there more to it than that?

As well as liking certain colours they also affect how we feel. Top companies know
about the power of colour: Shell, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Lancôme Paris,
HM Prison Services, The Body Shop, ICI Paints and Eurotunnel have all used the services
of professional colour consultants. Selecting the colours that are right for you is often more
important than just picking the colours you like -- luckily they’re often one and the same.

So are you into red and full of energy (and passion), or do you prefer more nurturing
pinks or calming greens? To discover if the colours you gravitate towards have the

This severely fire-damaged Victorian townhouse
in West London was to be home to a professional
couple with three children, so when they refurbished
they added two bedrooms and extended the
ground floor to make a large kitchen diner.

rchitect Pravin Muthiah of Coupdeville Architects
and interior designer Mirva Yoshinari transformed a
burnt-out shell into an unconventional family home.

What did you have to work with?

Pravin: “The house was in a sorry state. After a
fire it had been gutted and abandoned, with most
of the rear windows missing and the brickwork
still charred. Its only residents were a couple of
pigeons nesting in the open roof timbers. The

aim of the project was to give the property a new
lease of life, taking the old layout of the building
and reimagining it with a more modern feel.”

What was the ethos behind the kitchen design?

Mirva: “It doesn’t follow the rules of a typical
kitchen – I hate tiled floors, splashbacks, wall units
and matching this-and-that; it’s just so boring. The
brief was that the kitchen should be ergonomic,
comfortable, usable, industrial and visual, with
good entertaining space and points of reclaimed
interest. I didn’t want to be too precious about
everything being perfect, but to have a look that
gets better with age. I love this style; it’s easy to
live in and works with this type of house.”

What is the story behind the storage?

Mirva: “I mixed Magnet kitchen units with on-
site poured concrete, used reclaimed apple and
cheese boxes for storage and old brackets for
shelving above the counter. Open shelving allows
easier access to everything and looks good too.”

What is your favourite part of the design?

Pravin: “The flank wall in the dining area is my
favourite piece. It emphasises the rawness of the
materials used throughout the room, with the
exposed steel and the recovered brickwork from the
demolition of the rear of the house. It brings an
element of the external building that was lost back
inside the property, creating a link to its past.”
Mirva: “I love the reclaimed pieces which give it
character and retain the cool energy of the past.”

Master ensuite
The ensuite bathroom to the master bedroom takes
its inspiration from the idea of the Victorian orangery,
with lots of lush potted plants filling the space and
bringing a light, airy and natural feel to the room.
The white freestanding bath is the Cleo from Kohler,
a traditional white Victorian roll-top bath in cast iron
with claw feet, which contrasts sharply with the
bespoke modern glass screen. The curvaceous white
console basin, which stands on shapely white legs,
is the La Chapelle from Lefroy Brooks. In this room
too there are reclaimed features, including vintage
mirrors and radiators, while the narrow hand-made
tiles bring a touch of industrial chic to the design.

 Main bathroom
The striking feature of the main bathroom is the
wooden floor, bath surround and wall panelling made
from the house’s salvaged old floorboards – they
have such a glorious patina and rich character. The
mirror and fisherman’s pendant light are also vintage.
The bathroom has a Bettestarlet bath plus a basin,
pedestal and loo from Duravit’s 1930 range. The
walls are rendered for a slightly industrial edge, then
finished in Farrow & Ball’s pale grey Cornforth White.

Building most things in straight lines is

relatively easy, but curves…?
Remember geometry class at school? Squares, pentagons
and even decagons were relatively easy but when it came to
getting out the compass and dividers pretty much anything
after a circle was pretty tricky -- an ellipse requires a certain
skill and serpentines with increasing radii, well it’s just too
early for that sort of thing… turn it into a three dimensional
object such as a kitchen cabinet and the fun starts.

Ask any craftsman for curves and immediately most

suck their teeth and instantly double the price for the job…
Long considered pricey and very top-end, now companies
in the mid market are offering off-the-shelf curved
islands with convex or concave curved cupboards,
drawers and curved end-of-run wall cabinets too.
Even appliances are getting in on the act…

 Their Hampshire holiday home needed a makeover,
so Janet and Phil Pearce enlisted Andrew Rizza,
creative director of Dream Design, to completely
redesign the ground floor, which included designing
a light-filled and glamorous open-plan kitchen.

What was the brief?

Andrew: “Janet and Phil wanted a modern and stylish

kitchen that would fit in their open-plan living space.
It needed to blend with the living and dining room
and be almost inconspicuous as a kitchen. Janet likes
to entertain, so we set about creating a kitchen which
would be glamorous but in an understated fashion.”
Janet: “I wanted something that looked really modern
and was good quality. A local architect suggested I
take a look at Dream Design, and as I walked into the
showroom this kitchen was on display and we said
straight away that we liked it. I’m very spontaneous
when it comes to choosing things for the house.”

Why did you choose this look?

Andrew: “We wanted to create an elegant and
cosmopolitan kitchen that would fit seamlessly
into the open-plan space. The SieMatic S2
handleless kitchen is perfect for this as it is
has such a modern but elegant look.”
Janet: “We overlook the sea so it’s a very sunny
room; we wanted the kitchen to be bright and airy,
and it looks particularly sleek as it has no handles.”

What do you like best?

Janet: “I love the hot water tap so much that I’ve
just had one fitted at home, and there’s so much
storage in the kitchen that everything can be tidied
away and won’t gather dust when we aren’t there.”

Has it changed the way the space is used?

Janet: “The original kitchen was grubby-looking
pine and had a range cooker – they are like
Marmite, you either love them or hate them. I
just couldn’t get on with it so I do a lot more
cooking now as I enjoy the whole set-up.”

 Individualise your space -- add a shot of colour -- what’s your favourite?
This look is all about you. We’ve all got our favourite colour or
two -- or three… and when we wear them we look wonderful,
feel great and so positive we could conquer the world… In the
same way, you’ll know when you’ve found the colours that are
right for your bathroom as they’ll make your soul sing.

Work the look… once you’ve found your colours, select a neutral for
them to shine against. White and off-whites work well in the bathroom,
as they reflect the light and make a space appear larger, whereas
greys and blacks can make the space appear smaller, but shouldn’t be
dismissed as they offer a dramatic contrast to white sanitaryware.

To get the colour pop look the trick is to use colour sparingly,
and for maximum impact use it in a way you wouldn’t normally
think of. Think… surprise! We know… it’s a hard choice, the
range of colours is infinite -- just remember, colour is subjective,
there is no right or wrong -- for once it’s all about you.

W hen Fabian visited Copenhagen he looked through

the window of the Vipp store and saw his perfect
kitchen, designed by Morten Bo Jensen. Shortly
afterwards he found the perfect spot for it, when
he and wife Dorothee bought the two split level
ground/first floor apartments of a 1967 block
of flats to transform into a family home.

Why did you choose a Vipp kitchen?
Fabian: “The Vipp store was closed, but I took a
picture of the matt black kitchen through the window
to show to Dorothee. We were on the search for
an apartment and I knew this would be the right
kitchen. Some months later we were in Copenhagen
together and took a closer look… the rest is history.”

Did you worry about the colour?

Fabian: “The whole colour scheme of the apartment
is based on black and white, with some wood and
gold accents to add warmth, so a black kitchen was
the perfect addition to the whole concept. There
was a short moment of ‘is that too much black?’
when the kitchen was being put together on site,
but I couldn’t imagine anything else now. We are
more than satisfied with our black beauty.”

What was the brief?

Morten Bo: “There was no brief – the stainless
steel Vipp kitchen is based on fixed modules – Wall
Module, Tall Module and Kitchen Island – that can
be put together to suit the individual customer. It has
been well thought out down to the smallest detail;
from the knobs on the cooker to the pull-out spray
on the tap, the kitchen expresses a complete concept.”

Are you pleased with the result?

Fabian: “We love having friends for dinner,
that’s why we chose to keep the kitchen, dining
and living room open-plan; the kitchen is
not only functional but also an important
design element of the apartment.”

Solid and appearing hewn from one large block of stone,

wood or concrete, monolithic kitchen islands demand
attention. Freestanding in the middle of the kitchen, let’s
face it, they’re hard to ignore. Practical for families and
those who like to entertain, they are also seriously stylish.
Capacious, they offer tons of storage and often have drawers
deep enough for the largest of pots and pans -- which is
just as well -- as they look best in a clutter-free space.
114 Ideally an island should be made in proportion to the
space it will inhabit, as you need room to move around it
comfortably. The material you select needs to be carefully
thought through too. Should it be made of a similar material
to the rest of your kitchen so it blends with it, almost
appearing to grow out from it, or should it be a complete
contrast and stand alone, like a piece of modern sculpture?

So what makes monoliths so different to ordinary kitchen

islands? One of the most striking things is they are devoid
of all decoration and obvious embellishment. All the storage
you need is there, but clever design and detailing make
the doors and drawers almost invisible. Plus they have no
visible plinth, instead they have a cool shadow gap, which
emphasises the bulk and weight of the piece and underlines
where it stands on the floor -- a bit like you may emphasise a
word by underlining it. Solid, monolithic forms are no longer
restricted to kitchen islands, a whole host of other products
such as cabinets, fridge freezers and extractor hoods are

iving and working in stressful jobs in Dubai, Mike and Redha like
nothing better than relaxing in their Lancashire bolt-hole, even more so now
Katie Collins from Devol has designed them the perfect
kitchen in the newly extended ground floor.

“It’s our escape and the place where we do what we enjoy most – cooking
and entertaining our family and friends. Redha’s Algerian and culturally he cannot

let anyone leave the house without feeding them,” says Mike. “Practically,
it needed to work for two territorial cooks and as the soul of our home it
needed to be sociable and sit in the house as though it belonged.”

Mike and Redha did a considerable amount of research before buying. “We chose
Devol after spending months searching the internet and magazines. It was Redha who
found them and instantly we knew that was the look we were aiming for,” says Mike.

Devol’s showroom in Loughborough. Within two hours, we’d agreed our kitchen.”

a place where we can spend time, eat and drink with the people we love.”

“Lighting is important to us -- the kitchen and dining area

is flooded with natural light, but at night there’s nothing
worse than poor lighting when you’re trying to cook. It’s also
important to have layers of lighting: bright and focused when
you need to work, soft and aesthetic when you want to create
warmth and comfort. And it’s a case of practicality -- being
open-plan it’s nice to subdue the spots and hide the dirty
dishes when you join your guests at the supper table.”
