SAP began developing enterprise resource planning software in the 1970s, starting with the R/1 financial accounting system running on mainframe computers. In the 1980s SAP introduced the R/2 system which added manufacturing and supply chain functionality. In the 1990s SAP launched the R/3 client-server system to enable ERP use by larger enterprises. SAP has since continued expanding the capabilities and technologies used by its ERP software, including the ECC suite, enhancement packages, and the S/4HANA in-memory platform.
