Issue
Windows XP SP2 has been known to be problematic with OPC servers. Windows DCOM security can limit access to the ION
Enterprise OPC data access server.
An OPC client can connect to ION Enterprise when installed on the same computer, but when installed on a remote machine it is
unable to connect. The user may receive the error opcenum does not exist. The OPC tags are not browsable on the client.

Environment
Windows Server 2012, Windows 7,  Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, OPC Client

Cause
Windows XP SP2 is known to be problematic for distributed OPC. By default the DCOM settings do not allow information to be
viewed remotely.

Resolution
To establish a client OPC connection to an ION Enterprise OPC server on Windows XP perform the following steps:

1. Start ` Run ` Type dcomcnfg <enter>


2. Expand Component Services ` Computers
3. Right click on My Computer and select Properties
4. Click on the Default Properties tab and configure according to the following screenshot:
5. Select the COM Security tab. Edit the default permissions for Launch and Access permissions for the user/group desired
(Everyone in the example below) according to the following screenshots:

 
 

6. Expand My Computer ` DCOM Config


7. Find ION OPC Data Access Server from the list
8. Right click on ION OPC Data Access Server and select Properties
9. Ensure that the General properties are configured according to the following screenshot:
10. Select the Security tab.
11. Choose to use custom Launch and Activation permissions and configure the security for the user/group desired according to
the following screenshot:

12. Choose to use custom Access permissions and configure the security for the user/group desired according to the following
screenshot:
You should now be able to connect to the ION OPC server from a remote client.
