Lesson Plan

 Rulers
 Popsicle sticks
 Straws
 Paper
 Pencils
 Books
 Yard sticks
 Measuring tape

VI. Pre-Lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge:


The students will be read a book about measuring. The teacher will talk about how
some objects are bigger than others. We will talk about the different units of
measurement and how to properly write them. They will be fully ready to participate
in the lesson activity.

VII. Lesson Beginning:


We are going to hook the kids into the lesson by telling them we are going to pretend
to be tailors and seamstresses, and architects today. They will be measuring each
other and also objects in the classroom. There will be lots of rotating during this
lesson.
VIII. Instructional Plan:
1. Students will be put into groups of four. There will be 4 centers total.
2. Rulers will be given to one center.
3. Straws (cut in half) will be given to another center.
4. Popsicle sticks will be given to the third center.
5. Measuring tape and yard sticks will be given to the fourth center.
6. Charts with the different object names will be given to each student to log their
measurements
7. Explain what they are to measure in each center and how.
8. Center 1 which has the rulers will be able to measure the chalkboard and their
desks (in inches).
9. Center two which has the straws will be measuring textbooks (using straws as the
unit).
10. Center 3 will measure different textbooks (using Popsicle sticks as the unit).
11. Center 4 which has the measuring tape and yardsticks will measure each other’s
waists and the classroom door.
12. After everyone in each group has logged their measurements on their chart, the
groups will rotate to a different center.
13. After every group has been to every center students will go back to their original
groups.
14. Items will be collected from each center.
15. A class discussion will be held where students can share the measurements they
recorded on their papers.

IX. Conclusion:
Students will share what they measured and what units they used, and which center
they enjoyed the best. There will be a discussion about which items they found to be
larger and/or smaller than others. We will talk about the importance of measurements
and how they are used in everyday life. Explain the different jobs where
measurements are used and helpful when building or creating something.
