5.1.2 Critical Chain Project Management PPT Only PDF

Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) recommends adding three types of buffers to projects: project buffers added to the end, feeder buffers where non-critical paths merge with the critical chain, and resource buffers where scarce resources are needed. CCPM involves assigning resources to tasks, which can cause resource dependencies and increase project duration. Applying CCPM techniques like 50/50 task estimates and using feeder and project buffers can reduce the critical chain duration.

Critical Chain Project

Management
Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM)
• CCPM recommends three types of buffers
• Project Buffer: added to the end of a project
• Feeder Buffer: added to the network where a non-critical
patch merges with the critical chain*
• Resource Buffer: time buffers added where scarce resources
are needed

* Critical chain will be explained in the next few slides

Resource Buffer
CCPM Example

Example project without resource assignment.

How to resolve this problem?
CCPM Example

Note the resource dependency shown by the dotted arrow

CCPM Example

Note that to solve the problem of over allocation, the project duration has increased.
The critical chain is 1-3-6-7-8 i.e. the critical path after resource dependencies have
been taken into account
CCPM Example

Applying CCPM approach of using a 50/50* task estimate. Note

the two types of buffers – Feeder buffer and project buffer

* A 50% chance of completion before estimate time

Project & Feeder Buffers
Critical Chain 1-3-6-7-8

Initial length of critical chain = 2+ 18+15+10+5 = 50 days

After Applying 50-50 estimates

Length of critical chain = 1+ 8+8+6+3 = 26 days
CCPM Summary
• 50/50 estimate for task
• Use feeder buffer where a non-critical path merges with a
critical chain
• Use project buffer at the end
• No multitasking
