Problem 4

This document analyzes the runoff and outflow rates for a detention pond over a 20 hour period. It calculates the cumulative inflow and outflow for each hour and the difference between the two. The maximum difference of 301.5 cfs occurs at hour 0, indicating the minimum storage needed to prevent overflow is 1085.4 cubic feet.

Reservoir storage = max of (Vin - Vout)

Column (2) is inflow rates (cfs) into detention pond

Column (3) is cumulative of inflow rates in column (2)

Column (4) is outflow rates (cfs) is equal to 25 cfs

Column (5) is cumulative or outflow rates in column (4)

Column (6) is the difference between cumulative inflow rates (3) and cumulative outflow rates (5)
Column (7) is maximum of differences between cumulative inflow and outflows and is equal to 301.5 cfs

To evaluate minimum storage required for detention pond

We calculate as follows

Storage Volume = max(cum(Qin) – cum (Qout))*(1hr*3600)/1000

= 301.5 x 3600 /1000 = 1085.4 x 103 cft or ft3
