Assignment 1 2018

This document contains two mechanics of solids assignment problems. Problem 1 involves finding the principal stresses, direction cosines, and maximum shear stress of a given stress matrix. It also involves finding the normal, resultant, and shear stresses on a plane with specified direction cosines. Problem 2 involves finding the principal strains, elastic dilatation, mean strain, and deviatoric strain of a given microstrain tensor.

Assignment 1.

Problem 1
A stress state is defined as in the following stress matrix:

 9.68 2.44 10.21

Tσ =  2.44 14.32 7.38 
 
10.21 7.38 17.28

(a) Find the principal stresses, direction cosines of the largest principal stress and maximum
shear stress
(b) Find the normal, resultant and shear stress on a plane with direction cosines l=0.75 and
m=0.55 when n is positive.

Problem 2

A tensor of microstrains (1µstrain is10-6) is given as:

 100 100 − 100

Tε =  100 200 200 
 
 − 100 200 200 

(a) Principal strains

(b) Elastic dilatation and mean strain
(c) Deviatoric strain

Strain is the symmetric tensor and the invariants, mean strain and deviatoric strain tensors are
calculated in the same manner as stress invariants, mean stress and deviatoric stress tensors.
