Kindergarten Lesson Plan: Community and Community Helpers

Objectives:
1. SWBAT explain the importance of community and community helpers.
2. SWBAT tell the difference between helpful and unhelpful community helpers.
3. SWBAT explain how they can improve their community.

Lesson Outline:
Time What? How?
5 min Introduction Define Community: a place where people live and work
Define Community Helpers: people in our community who help
others

10 min Anchor Chart Friends today we are going to learn about different types of
community helpers and what they do to help us and keep our
community safe.
Police Officers: People or the department of people who
enforce laws, investigate crimes, and make arrests
Firefighters: A member of a group that works to put out fires
Teachers: A person or thing that teaches something
Activists: A person who uses or supports strong actions (such as
public protests) to help make changes in politics or society
Veterinarian: A person who is trained to give medical care and
treatment to animals
Postal Worker: A person who delivers mail and packages

20 min Independent Distribute community writing paper and community helper


Practice pictures, assess classroom climate and provide assistance when
necessary. Prompt students to write about how the community
helper they chose keeps the community safe.
15 min Review/Closing Allow students to share how they thought the activity went. Ask
Circle if it was difficult to complete that activity. Ask what students
would have done differently. Ask how that made students feel
about the language they use.
