Part – A
1. Define the following terms (i) Coplanar force (ii) Concurrent forces.
2. Define force.
3. Why the couple moments is said to be a free vector?
4. State the necessary conditions for equilibrium of rigid bodies in two
dimensions.
5. Define centroid.
6. When will the product of inertia of a lamina becomes zero?
7. A body moves along a straight line so that its displacement from a
fixed point on the line is given by 3t 2 + 2t. Find the velocity and
acceleration at the end of 3 seconds.
8. Define relative velocity.
9. State the laws of dry friction.
10. What is general plane motion?
Part – B
11. (i)Define parallelogram law of forces. Derive the equation for the
resultant force of two concurrent coplanar system of force.(6)
(ii)A system of four forces acting on a body is as shown in fig (b).
Determine the resultant force and its direction. (10)

12. (i)Explain lami’s theorem with neat sketch. (4)
(ii) The forces 10N, 20N, 30N and 40N are acting on one of the
vertices of a regular pentagon towards the other four vertices taken in
order as shown in fig (c). Find the magnitude and direction of the
resultant force R. (12)
13. Two identical rollers, each of weight 500N are supported by an
inclined plane making an angle of 30 0 to the horizontal and a vertical
wall as shown in the fig. (a) sketch the free body diagrams of the two
rollers (b) Assuming smooth surfaces, find the reactions at the
support points. (16)

14. (i) Explain resolution of forces into rectangular components.(4) (ii)A
tower guy wire shown below is anchored by means of a bolt at A as
shown. The tension in the wire is 2500 kN. Determine (a) the
components Fx, Fy, and Fz of the force acting on the bolt. (b) the
angles defining the direction of the force. (12)

15. (i)Define parallel axis theorem. Draw the suitable diagram.(4)


(ii)Find the moment of inertia of the section shown in fig. about the
centroidal axes. (12)

16. (i) Define radius of gyration. (2)
(ii)A rectangular prism is shown in figure. The origin is at the
geometric centre of the prism. The x, y and z-axes pass through the
mid points of faces. Derive the mass moment of inertia of the prism
about the x-axis. (14)

17. Two trains A and B leave the same station on parallel lines. A starts
with a uniform acceleration of 0.15 m/s 2 and attains the speed of 24
km/hr, after which its speed remains constant. B leaves 40 sec later
with uniform acceleration of 0.30 m/s 2 to attain a maximum speed of
48 km/hr. Its speed also becomes constant thereafter. When will B
overtake A. (16)

18. A ball of mass 2kg moving with a velocity of 3m/s, impinges on a ball
of mass 4 kg moving with a velocity of 1 m/s. The velocities of the
two balls are parallel and inclined at 30 0 to the line of joining their
centers at the instant of impact. If the coefficient of restitution is 0.5.
Find (i) Direction in which the 4kg ball will move after impact. (ii)
velocity of the 5 kg ball after impact. (iii) Direction in which the 2 kg
ball will move after impact. (iv) Velocity of the 2kg ball after impact.

19. (i)Derive the expression for belt friction. (6)


(ii)Two blocks A and B of mass 50kg and 100kg respectively are
connected by a string C which passes through a frictionless pulley
connected with the fixed wall by another string D as shown in figure.
Find the force P required to pull the block B. Also find the tension in
the string D. Take coefficient of friction at all contact surfaces as 0.3.

20. (i) A ladder of weight 1000 N and length 4m rests as shown in figure.
If a 750N weight is applied at a distance of 3m from the top of ladder,
it is at the point of sliding. Determine the coefficient of friction
between ladder and the floor. (10)

(ii) A rope is wrapped three times around a rod as shown in figure.


Determine the force required on the free end of the rope, to support a
load of W = 20 kN. Take μ as 0.30. (6)
