Abstract

This study aimed to find out the Perceived effect of technology in the learning process of a

student in JBLFMU –A . The Descriptive creative method of research was adopted. The

study focused on the effect of technology in the learning process of the students. The

research design used in the study was the complete randomized design. Descriptive data

analysis used to presents the results of the study with the use of mean and percentage using

SPSS. It was found out in the survey that the top answer of the students when they are taken

as an entire group is “Technology helps students in their assignments” and the least item that

the students choose is “Technology enables students to apply the knowledge they learned

through internet in their daily lives”.

Chapter 1

Introduction to the Study

Chapter one is divided into five parts 1: Background of the Study, Statement of the

Problem, Significance of the Study, Definition of Terms, and Delimitation of the Study.

Part One, Background of the Study: yields the overview or rationale of the research

problem.

Part Two, Statement of the problem: determines the general and specific problems.

Part Three, Significance of the Study: brings out the value of the study, the relevance

of the results, for whom the results will be applicable.

Part Four, Definition of Terms: important terms that are applicable to the study that

need to be determined.

Part Five, Delimitation of the Study: those distinctive that limit the scope (define the

boundaries) of the inquiry as determined by the conscious exclusionary and inclusionary

decisions that were made throughout the development of the study.

Background of the Study

We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand,

because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience

much of our world (Warlick, 2016).

Technology is an integral element in the world today. Technology in today’s world

touches, influences and shapes every aspect of human life. Technology plays significant roles

in work places, education entertainment and the way of life surviving. technology acts as

catalyst for changes, change in work environment handily and exchanging information,

teaching process and methods, learning approaches, research arena and in using knowledge,

information therefore, the present paper discusses the role of technology, the promise,

benefits, limitation, challenges and key hurdles of integration to education system.

In today’s generation, a lot of things demand technology some or many of us believe

that development and modernization of technology is a big help in accomplishing and

carrying out tasks in a more reliable, more effective, more accurate and faster way. Many

would even say that technology has been a part of their lives.

Occasionally, a new technology appears which promises to change our lives for the

better. It either improves our performance by working more simply at a faster rate or it

creates possibilities that did not previously exist. As human have evolved, so as their

technology. Human have attempted to use technology and has produce an enormous of

benefits for mankind.

Applying it to the learning process, technology has the power to transform teaching

by ushering in a new model of connected teaching. This model links teachers to their students

and to professional content, resources, and systems to help them improve their own

instruction and personalize learning. Technology can be used to improve teaching and

learning and help our students be successful. However, technology can be a “force

multiplier” for the teacher. Instead of the teacher being the only source of help in a

classroom, students can access web sites, online tutorials and more to assist them.

(Whiteside, 2011)

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the perceived effects of technology in learning process

of selected Grade 11 SHS Students in JBLFMU-A.

It also sought answers to the following questions:

1. What are the perceived effects of technology in the learning process among the grade

11students of JBLFMU-A when taken as a whole?

2. What are the perceived effects of technology in the learning process among the grade

11 students of JBLFMU-A when classified according to section?

Significance of the study

The result of the study may be beneficial to the following;

Parents. This study will help them because the students learning process increase and

that satisfy and meet their expectations towards their children progress.

Schools. this study will help the school because they may receive good feedbacks

about what kind of facilities they have to help the learning process of their students

Students. This study will give them a greater knowledge about the way of technology

affects them and help them when it comes to their learning process both positive and

negative way.

Teachers. This study should be important for them because it may be their basis on

how they will consider technology as a helpful or destruction to the learning process of their

students.

Generally, this research study aimed to determine who benefits more in using

technology. The importance of this study lies to the eventual presentation of data that seek to

answer the question on what kind of teaching strategies are needed in order to have a better

effect to a learning process of the students.

Definition of Terms

For the purpose of clarification, the following terms defined: conceptually and

operationally.

Educational technology--is the study an ethical practice of facilitating learning and

improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological process

and resources. (Januszewski and Molenda, 2008).

In this study, technology refers to the use of laptop, projector, speaker or any

multimedia in the classroom for learning purpose

Learning Process--is arguably the most powerful model for facilitating and inspiring

individual, group and organizational learning and development.(Princeton Unvesity,2015).

In this study “learning process” refers to the way learning is being acquired by grade 11

students of JBLFMU-A.

Delimitation of the Study

This study aimed to determine the perceived effects of technology in the learning

process among the grade 11 Students of JBLFMU Arevalo. The researchers prepared a

research data analysis.

This study was conducted during the S.Y. 2017-2018 with selected SHS students in

JBLFMU Arevalo. They were grade 11 and who understand the perceived effects of

technology in learning process.

Mean and percentage were used in the descriptive statistics. All statistical

computation was processed.

Chapter 2

Review of Related Literature

Chapter Two presents literatures relevant to the advantages and disadvantages of

technology in the learning process of selected SHS students of JBLFMU-A. It includes two

parts: The Positive and Negative Effects of Technology on Students and the effect of

technology in the classroom.

Part One, The Positive and Negative Effects of Technology on Students, discusses

some of advantage and disadvantage.

Part Two, The Effect of the use of Technology in the classroom.

Positive and Negative Effects of Technology

This study focuses on secondary school students learning different subjects using

technology. According to the journal Children and Computer Technology – Effects on

Cognitive skills and Academic performance, playing specific computer games has been

found to have immediate positive effects on specific cognitive skills, like thinking and

knowing. Using Computers at home has been linked mildly positive effects on Academic

performance. This will assist children to understand language and numbers, to reason and

problem solve, and to learn and remember.

Research has shown using technology in classroom as a tool for establish meaningful

projects to engage students in critical thinking and problem solving. Technology can be used

restructure and redesign the classroom to enable an environment that promotes the

development of high order thinking skills (Kurt, S 2010). Technology also increases student

collaboration. Collaboration is a highly effective tool for learning. Students cooperatively

works together to either create projects or they can learn from each other by reading the work

of their peers (Keser, Huseyin, & Ozdamli, 2011).

One study that was conducted to determine whether Wiki technology would improve

students’ writing skills in a college English as a foreign language writing class showed

benefits to using Wiki technology. Students were invited to join a Wiki page where they

would write and post passages and then read and respond to the passages of their fellow

classmates. Students participating in the study reported that their receiving immediate

feedback from the instructor was a benefit of using this from of technology. Students in the

study also reported learning vocabulary, spelling, and sentence structure by reading the work

of their classmates (Lin & Yang, 2011).

Studying mathematics using technology, the study shows positive result on student

learning in mathematics. Teachers noted that the internet provided math activities at different

levels. It gave students an opportunity to choose the level they are comfortable working. The

result showed that students were engaged during the math lesson using technology and were

able to discuss what they learned the following day. Some students who participated in the

lesson believed that the computer helped them understand what the teacher was saying about

the lesson. Technology can be used as a way to create hands-on and meaningful math lesson

(Herron, 2010).

Another study found that integrating technology and peer-led discussions of literature

can produce increased student engagement and motivation. Technology used in these small

group discussions of literature includes wikis, online literature circles, and online book clubs.

With these technologies, students were able to connect with readers from other school, states,

and even other ideas and cultures. These online literature discussions have the ability to

create a sense of community and foster positive social interaction (Coffey, 2012). Continuing

advancements in technology change the ways all people live and work. The internet is

becoming a common learning tool in many classrooms (Acikalin, 2009). This means provide

a meaningful learning experience for all students. Teachers today have many opportunities to

use technology increasing the ways student learn.

The students at Van Meter use their laptops for virtual reality programs and creating

Prezi software slideshows, YouTube videos, and reading and writing blogs. At one school,

one fifth grade girl talked about how she loved to present and show what she could do by

using technology. The students at Van Meter are very excited about the learning activities

that the laptops allow which is evident showing students’ in learning. Students are being

allowed to develop their abilities and strengths by doing activities in which they are

passionate. The learning is immediate, and relevant. They are using technology to interact

and exchange ideas, research independently, adapt to new situations, and take ownership

over their own learning (Miller, 2011).

Technology is a big part of people’s daily lives, it is pertinent and vital that children

learn how to use it at an early age. When children use technology tools in elementary

schools, a sense of confidence and competence in their computer skills will grow as they get

older. Many children today have access to a great deal of technology in their home; this

access will result in students being comfortable by using technology at school as well. When

elementary school teachers use and model different forms of technologies, they actively

engage their students and create a stimulating work environment (Kenney, 2011).

A study to examine the effects of information and communication technologies on

students’ math and science achievement was conducted with 4,996 students in Turkey. The

data was obtained from the results of The Program for International Student Assessment

(PISA), a standardized test given to 9th grade students. The study results indicated that

students’ exposure to Information and communication technology at home and school had a

positive impact on their internet affects peoples’ lives by increasing communication,

expanding educational services, and increasing quality along with personal interaction. More

emphasis has been placed on seeking, evaluating, organizing using and sharing information

with others. The internet is the greatest source for information and the best way to quickly

share and exchange information with others, The internet sharpens one’s ability to search and

analyze information (Tutkun, 2011).

The internet is used as a source for teaching material. Providing information and

communication technologies for teaching and learning will have some advantages. First the

students will play a more active role, which will help them retain more information. Next

follow-up discussions will contain more detail where students will become more

independent. Last, the students will easily process new student-base educational material and

their skills will increase (Tutkun, 2011).

Technology for students with special learning needs. The Etiwanda School District in

California has implemented a technology integration program district wide. Teachers

received technology training and then began integrating technology into general education

lessons on a daily basis. This program also included a practical technology support plan for

teachers working with students with special needs. This plan enabled teachers to help these

students by weaving technology resources into instruction in meaningful ways. The plan

proved to be successful in the Etiwanda School District. The students with special learning

needs are now meeting their IEP (Individualized Education Program) goals more quickly due

to this technology integration. They are also improving their performance on district

benchmarks (Courduff, 2011).

Internet usage in secondary schools is familiar, based on the report on Children and

Internet use: A comparative analysis of Brazil and seven European countries. This report

states that the top five activities reported across countries pointed to the dominance of

activities such as visiting social network sites and watching video clips across groups of 11 to

16 years old. This shown that rapid access to mobile devices tends to lead to greater demand

for uninterrupted connectivity, involving communication, entertainment and knowledge

acquisition.

From a point view of multimedia, children interact not only with family and wider

community through these devices in the sense of public and private, freedom and sociability.

Parents from a variety of backgrounds express ambivalent positions to children. They

indicate their motivation to provide mobile devices to children as tools to enable parental

control and opportunities for digital inclusion. However they expressed the concern about

their accesses to content considered inappropriate, such as cyber bullying, exposure to

advertising, and contact with strangers (Haddon and Vincent, 2014).

Online study of EU kids (Smahel & Wright, 2014), many children have come across

sexual content on the internet. It is mostly classified as unwanted content (alongside ads or

violent videos) that, uncontrollably, appears or pops up on commonly used platforms, such as

Google, YouTube, Face book, or gaming sites. Of relevance to this report, children often

encounter sexual content on certain messaging and blogging apps on mobile devices, like

Snapchat or Tumblr.

Even though encountering sexual content can be upsetting, children are much more

concerned about the risks of sexting. Exchanging sexual messages and content, and

sometimes showing these on Smartphone’s, can occur as part of sexual experimenting and/or

joking between peers, especially among boys, the practice of (girls) sharing sexy pictures is

generally disapproved of, and seen as asking for trouble, whether the pictures are posted on

social media or exchanged in private messages. With the Smartphone it is also very easy to

react to this quickly, similar to online bullying, children have the impression that mobile

devices facilitate taking and sharing pictures, also sexy pictures that may be misused.

Technology plays a vital role in education sector to enhance the learning potential for

students. It has to focus to be a supplemental teaching tool to do interactive presentation

using, video clips, graphics and other audio visual elements to make students actively engage

in lessons, as well as to keep lessons alive. This will motivate students to learn further. A

fifth grade teacher was quoted in a U.S. Department of Education article saying,

“Technology is the ultimate carrot for students. It’s something they want to master. Learning

to use it enhances their self-esteem and makes them excited about coming to school”. Based

on this it develops every student to learn at his or her own pace. There are many ways that

integrating technology into the classroom can help students learn at a rate that is comfortable

to them, and that allows them to retain information.

On other hand technology leads students to exchanging sexual messages and content,

and sometimes showing these on Smartphone’s, can occur as part of sexual experimenting

and/or joking between peers. It is also very easy to react to this quickly, similar to online

bullying, children have the impression that mobile devices facilitate taking and sharing

pictures, also sexy pictures that may be misused. To address these negative aspects of

technology, certainly not to cut down all technology but with possible solutions like

moderation can be done with teachers and parents. Monitor the use of technology by the

student. Presently most of the schools are using username and passwords to access the

internet and it will be recorded the history of visited sites by the student. This will help to

track the student’s usage of technology. Apart from this, suitable awareness program relating

to the negative impact of technology has to introduce in schools this will enable students to

control the usage of negative aspects of technology (Lawrance, 2017).

Effect of Technology in the Classroom

Technology in the classroom is already a reality in most schools. The extent to which

technology is integrated into curriculum is likely to increase exponentially as technological

advances continue and the cost of technology decreases (Bordar, 2010; Klein, 2010). This

meta- analysis sought to understand if technology could enhance students‟ learning

experience and overall academic performance, as well as to provide additional understanding

of the role of TEL programs in curriculum. Klein (2010) concludes that technology is a tool

that can enhance learning, but cannot solely be relied upon to increase student academic

performance. Supporting these findings, Dror (2009) and Honan (2010) assert that teachers

often rely upon technology, rather than using it for its intended use due to lack of training and

poorly communicated objectives. As the use of technology in the classroom continues and

expands, an understanding of what technology to use, when to use the technology, and why

the technology should be used is imperative. Beniger (1989) and Postman (1995) warn

against the overuse or misuse of technology. We proceed under the assumption that

information is our friend, believing that cultures may suffer grievously from a lack of

information, which, of course, they do. It is only now beginning to be understood that

cultures may also suffer grievously from information glut, information without meaning,

information without control mechanisms. (Beniger, 1989, p. 70)

To avoid the common mistake of employing unnecessary technology, or technology

that is not most desirable to achieve academic goals, Hayes (2006) suggests school

administrators should carefully evaluate the school’s culture and the culture of the student

body. Additionally, teachers must be provided with adequate training prior to technology

integration and continued training throughout the TEL program to ensure that all concerns

are addressed and objectives are met (Bordbar, 2010; Communication Without Barriers,

2007; Hennessy, et al., 2007; Honan, 2010; Venezky, 2004). Although Daft and Lengel‟s

(1986) media richness theory was originally developed as a guide for effective managerial

communication across various media channels, the theory is applicable in the understanding

of TEL programs. Just as different media were theorized to be more desirable to

organizations and organizational members based on characteristics of the media, TEL

programs can be selected based on whether their characteristics or features will make the

technology more desirable to students, teachers, and the school’s culture (Nowak & Rauh,

2004; Feaster, et al., 2007). While some characteristics, such as ease of implementation, may

be desirable for nearly all schools, it is likely that seemingly similar schools will prefer to use

different TEL programs based on the school’s culture, culture of the student body,

implementation time, and existing technology used (Hayes, 2006).

Since there are a number of factors that must be present for the successful integration

of TEL into curriculum, it cannot be determined whether TEL programs actually cause

increased student academic performance. However, there is a strong correlation between

increased student academic performance and TEL programs that incorporate proper teacher

training, clearly defined goals and objectives, and consider student and institutional culture.

Chapter 3

Method

Chapter Three includes five parts: Purpose of the Study and Research Design,

Respondents, Instrument, Data Collection, and Data Analysis.

Part One, the Purpose of the Study and Research Design, presents the reasons on why

and how the study was conducted.

Part Two, Respondents, presents the participants in this study and how they were

chosen.

Part Three, Instrument, describes the number of items and structure of questions.

Part Four, Data Collection, presents procedures or steps in gathering the data needed

for the study.

Part Five, Data Analysis, describes the method used to analyze and interpret the

gathered data in the study.

Purpose of the Study and Research Design

This study aimed to determine the perceived effects of technology in learning process

of selected grad 11 students in JBLFMU-A. Specifically, this study sought to answer the

following questions:

1. What are the perceived effects of technology in the learning process of selected SHS

students of JBLFMU-A when taken as a whole?

2. What are the perceived effects of technology in the learning process of selected SHS

students of JBLFMU-A when classified according to section?

The descriptive analysis of research was used in this study because the researchers gave

researcher-made questionnaires on selected grade 11 students of JBLFMU-A sort to answer

the questions of the study.

Respondents

The respondents on this study were the 68 students, identified or selected by their

section that is through cluster sampling.

Instrument

The researcher made questionnaires were used in gathering the data is determining

the perceived effects of technology in learning process among the grade 11 students of

JBLFMU-A.

The first part of the questionnaire consisted of demographic information of the

respondents. The second part questionnaire consisted of how technology affects students and

helps them when it comes to their learning process. The respondents identified their answers

by checking the appropriate box.

Data Collection

The questionnaires were personally administered by the researchers. The

questionnaires were given to the selected grade 11 SHS students of JBLFMU-A. The first

part was the demographic information of the respondent and the second part was the question

proper. Upon the approval of the research instructor after certain preliminary activities such

as construction of instruments and validation, permission was secured from the subject area

head. A letter was sent to the authority in charge to ask permission to allow the researchers to

conduct a survey. Upon approval, the researchers assisted and gave directions and

instructions to the respondents as to how the questionnaires should be answered. They were

also assured of their secrecy and strict confidentiality of their given responses. Upon retrieval

of the accomplished copies of the instrument, they were scored, and the scores were tallied,

classified, tabulated, analyzed and interpreted, and made ready for statistical procedure.

Data Analysis

After gathering all the completed questionnaires from the respondents, total responses

for each item were obtained and tabulated. The data gathered were analyzed and interpreted

using mean distribution to indicate the mean and percentage of responses for each question

and ranked to classify the Perceived effects from highest to lowest.

Chapter 4

Results

Chapter Four presents the Descriptive Data Analysis

Part One, Descriptive Data Analysis, presents the results of the study with the use of

mean and percentage.

Descriptive Data Analysis

Table 2 shows the results on perceived effects of technology in the learning process

of grade 11 students when respondents were taken as an entire group. The top five perceived

effects are: “Technology helps students in their assignments” (M=3.50, R1), “Technology

makes the presentation of report easier” (M=3.49, R2),“Technology presents attractive visual

aids” (M=3.43, R3),“Technology gives students opportunity to explore different knowledge”

(M=3.41, R4), “Technology makes students learning process easy” (M=3.18, R5).

as perceived by the Grade 11 students (Entire Group).

It can be gleaned in the result that effect of technology in the learning process that

most student choose in the survey is “Technology helps students in their assignments”

(M=3.50), “Technology makes the presentation of report easier” (M=3.49), “Technology

presents attractive visual aids” (M=3.43) and the least item that the students choose is

“Technology enables students to apply the knowledge they learned through internet in their

daily lives” (M=2.7).

It can be gleaned in the result that effect of technology in the learning process that

most student choose in the survey is “Technology enables students to apply the knowledge

they learned through internet in their daily lives” (M=3.56), “Technology makes students

more motivated to attend classes” (M=3.53), “Technology ensures better future” (M=3.50)

and the least item that the students choose is “Technology use increases the academic

achievement of students” (M=2.28).

Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations

Chapter Five includes the Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations of the study.

Part One, Summary, itemizes the answers to the specific questions.

Part Two, Conclusions, presents the general concept or result of the study.

Part Three, Recommendations, enumerates the things to be done for future improvement of

the study.

Summary

Based on the results of the study, the following summary was formulated:

1. Grade 11 students taken as an entire group in perceived effects of technology in their

learning process. Whereas, the most answer is “Technology helps students in their

assignments” (M=3.50), “Technology makes the presentation of report easier”

(M=3.49), “Technology presents attractive visual aids” (M=3.43), Technology gives

students opportunity to explore different knowledge” (M=3.41), “Technology makes

students learning process easy “(M=3.18).

2. Grade 11 students classified according to section in perceived effects of technology in

their learning process (Higher Section). Whereas, the most answer is “Technology

enables students to apply the knowledge they learned” (M=3.56), “Technology makes

students more motivated to attend classes” (M=3.53), “Technology ensures better

3. Grade 11 students classified according to section in perceived effects of technology in

their learning process (Lower Section). Whereas, the most answer is “Technology

increases students’ creative thinking” (M=3.50), “Technology gives students

opportunity to explore different knowledge” (M=3.44), “Technology makes students

more motivated to attend classes” (M=3.42), “Technology use increases the academic

achievement of students” (M=3.31), “Technology enables students to apply the

knowledge they learned through internet in their daily lives “(M=3.22).

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn.

1. It was found out that in the survey that the top answer of the students when they

are taken as an entire group is “Technology helps students in their assignments”.

Students can access information at any time that technology integration makes

everything different and simpler. Therefore we conclude that technology use has

positive aspects were also reported, including more access to information,

collaboration, revision, and providing students with skills they will need in

school.

2. It was found out that in the survey that the top answer of the students when

classified to higher section is “Technology enables students to apply the

knowledge they learned”. Technology has become an important instrument in

education. It holds promise both for increasing access to knowledge and as a

means of promoting learning.

3. It was found out that in the survey that the top answer of the students when

classified to lower section is “Technology increases students’ creative thinking”.

Therefore, educators should maintain and develop the creative thinking of

students and prepare them for the life ahead equipped with a mindset that allows

them to tackle problems and challenges with innovative and creative solutions.

Recommendations

The researchers further recommend that:

1. Students should know the perceived effects of technology.

2. Students can make use of technology in searching their assignments.

3. The student’s knowledge about technology can help them to apply and use it in

their daily lives.

4. Parents should also be aware on the benefits of technology to students.

5. The respondents should use internet in order to learn some knowledge.

6. The faculty should established computer class to the students specially in making

presentation report.

7. Teachers can make use of technology in order to caught up attention of student.

8. The Principal should have an implementation in using technology as a way of

improving students’ academic performance.

9. The Principal should promote technology to both students and teachers in

presenting their reports.

10. The Administrator should take an action to make technology improve in this

university.

11. The university will collect some data to both students and teachers on what the

effect of technology to them.

12. The university should take a look of this problem because it ensures the learning

process of every student.
