Assignment 2, Flat Slab Flexural Design

A reinforced concrete flat slab floor with rectangular bays of 6.4 x 8.0 m and 250 mm thickness is designed to carry service dead and live loads. The slab spans between 600mm x 600mm columns and the material properties are specified. The design task is to calculate the flexural reinforcement for exterior and interior spans in the long direction, check the adequacy of slab shear, and design and check for punching shear in the first perimeter zone according to BS8110.

Assignment 2 Flat Slab Flexural Design

A reinforced concrete flat slab floor consists of rectangular bays measuring 6.4 x 8.0 m, as shown in Fig.
2.1 below. The slab thickness is 250 mm. The supporting columns are 600mm x 600mm

The floor is designed to carry a service dead load of 2.0 kPa and live load of 4.0 kN/m2, uniformly
distributed over its surface in addition to its own weight.

The material properties are: fcu = 30 MPa and fy = 460 MPa.

Design the followings to BS8110, Part 1,

a.) The slab flexural reinforcement for the exterior and interior spans of the interior panels in the
long direction. Use Table 3.12 of BS8110 to calculate the design moments.

b.) Check the adequacy of slab shear.

c.) Check and design for punching shear. (Only for 1st perimeter punching shear control zone)
