“Electrical Power “ is indispensable as it drives the life of people around the world.

It has
revolutionized our lives and working. Being from the third world country I can appreciate the extreme
importance of electrical power in day-to-day life.

I have been always fascinated by power, energy and its transmission. I used to ask my teachers in
high school how power generation and transmission is done though it was not in our course
curriculum at high school .I bought some books and tried to obtain some fundamental knowledge on
the topic. I was able to come in top 1% among the 150000 who appeared in IIT - Joint entrance
exam (1999), which is considered as the toughest under graduate admission exam in the world. The
desire to gain more knowledge in the field of energy was one of the reasons for which I took Energy
Engineering (Electrical Department) at IIT-Kharagpur, which is one of the premier engineering
institutions of India.

My undergraduate education at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur has exposed me to a wide

range of excellent courses in Energy Engineering and has helped me consolidate my understanding
of power systems and power electronics. In addition to these, I had the opportunity to work on
several laboratory experiments that have helped me learn the practical and theoretical aspects of
Power systems.

The course of Power Systems in my Sixth semester taught me various aspects of power systems
like properties and representations of transmission lines, Load flow studies, corona discharge, fault
studies. I was really fascinated by the subject and its importance. The laboratories like “Power
systems laboratory” and “High voltage laboratory” in which experiments on relays and corona
discharge etc were done. It helped me in appreciating the practical relevance of the subject. My
eagerness to expand the sphere of knowledge in this field motivated me to present seminars on
“High Voltage Transmission System (HVDC)” and “ Relays and its operational characteristics”.

I participated in national power systems conference (NPSC-2001), held in our institute, in which
several lectures on various fields of Power Systems like Power Generation, High Voltage
engineering, system planning, management and analysis were presented .The exposure increased
my inclination and determination to work in this field.

Currently, I am working on a year long project under the supervision of Dr N K Kishore which
involves measuring the variation of soil resistivity with parameters like moisture and salinity. In this
experiment I am conducting experiments on different types of soils like clay, surface soil, sand and
gravel, loam etc using soil box. The results will help in grounding assessment and understanding of
electric field patterns. In this way the experiment has industrial relevance.

I have decided to pursue research as a career option. It gives me great satisfaction in applying my
knowledge, which I have earned till now, to develop further understanding and solving practical
problems. For me no other profession promises the creative satisfaction and intellectual
independence that research does.
Thirty years from now, I want to look back at the accomplishments of my life and feel a sense of
satisfaction. Satisfaction, because my work made a significant impact in my field. And if I can
achieve this goal I will consider my career a success.

Six or seven years from now, I see myself as part of a leading research group, contributing my bit to
the field of power engineering

I have chosen to pursue graduate studies at Arizona State University because by working under the
guidance of the distinguished researchers I am confident of making an original contribution in the
field of Power systems. Moreover, the projects going on in the Power Systems Engineering
Research Center matches my field of interest.

Hence I wish to pursue MS degree in your institute, followed by doctoral research (PhD) in the same.
I understand that successful completion of a PhD degree requires immense hard work. With my
most cherished dream of becoming a researcher before me, and my sound training at IIT Kharagpur
behind me, I am confident that I would fit well in your program.
I look forward to join your department as a graduate student and having a long and mutually
profitable association with your University.
