Assignment 1: Question 1: A Soil Profile Consists of 5 M of Silty Sand Underlain by 13 M of Clay. The Ground

This document contains 3 soil mechanics questions regarding stresses and properties of soils at different depths and stress conditions. Question 1 asks to calculate vertical and horizontal stresses at a depth of 11m in a soil profile consisting of silty sand over clay with given unit weights and groundwater table. Question 2 involves plotting Mohr's circle to determine principal stresses, maximum shear stress, and stresses on a plane inclined at 25 degrees from a given stress state. Question 3 represents an unconfined compression test result using Mohr's circle to indicate undrained shear strength.

SOIL MECHANICS-II (UG CE-2015, Sec: B)

ASSIGNMENT 1

Question 1: A soil profile consists of 5 m of silty sand underlain by 13 m of clay. The ground
water table is at a depth of 2.8 m below the ground surface. The sand has a unit weight of 19 kN/m3
above the groundwater table and 20 kN/m3 below. The clay has a unit weight of 15.7 kN/m3 and
effective friction angle of 35o. Compute σx, σ`x, σz and σ`z at the depth of 11 m.
Question 2: A soil sample is subjected to the stresses σz = 600 kPa, σx = 300 kPa and τ = 150 kPa
(refer to the figure below). Plot Mohr’s circle to determine (a) σ1, σ3 and the inclination of major
principal stress plane from the horizontal plane (b) maximum shear stress (τmax) (c) the normal
and shear stresses on a plane inclined at angle 25o (counter-clock wise) from the major principal
stress plane.

Question 3: A soil sample was tested in unconfined compression test machine. The maximum
compressive stress it could take before failure was 225 kPa. Represent these stress conditions using
Mohr’s circle and indicate undrained shear strength (su) of soil.
