Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagram Using Spreadsheets

This document provides instructions for developing a spreadsheet to calculate and plot the shear force and bending moment diagrams of a beam based on given span, loads, and load locations. It outlines entering the beam properties and loads, calculating reactions, populating cells with x-distance values, using formulas to determine shear forces and bending moments along the beam, and creating charts to plot the diagrams for the entire span. The result is a spreadsheet that generates the shear force and bending moment diagrams for any beam with specified loading conditions.

Shear force and Bending Moment Diagram using Spreadsheets

Aim :

To develop a spread sheet for obtaining the shear force and bending moment diagram of the
beam for the given loading

Procedure

1. Open a new spreadsheet and enter the span of the beam, the loads acting on the beam
and the location of the load on the span in consecutive rows of the sheet.
2. Calculate the reactions of end supports by typing the formula in the cell and referring
to the cells where values of span and loading are stored.
3. In one column, store the values of x (distance from left support) starting from zero to
the entire span with increments of 0.1m.
4. Calculate the shear forces and bending moment values for the value of x by entering
formula in the adjacent cells.
5. By dragging and dropping over the entire range of x from 0 to span of the beam,
obtain the values of shear force and bending moment for the entire span.
6. Insert chart to plot x against shear force to obtain the shear force diagram.
7. Insert chart to plot x against bending moment to obtain the bending moment diagram.

Result
Spreadsheet has been developed for plotting the shear force and bending moment diagrams of
the beam subjected to the given loading.
