Compre 3 Problem Set No. 2 Mid-Term

This document appears to be a problem set from a structural engineering course. It contains 3 design problems: 1) design of a cantilever balcony slab, 2) design of a rectangular tied column, and 3) design of an isolated footing to support an interior column. The document provides the load information, material properties, and dimensions needed to solve each design problem. It was prepared by the instructor Engr. Jeric R. Aduna for BSCE-5A students at the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology.

COMPRE 3
PROBLEM SET NO. 2
Mid-Term
Score:

Direction: Solve the following question neatly and correctly.

1. Design a cantilever projecting out from a room slab extending 1.0m and to be used as balcony
(LL = 300 kg/m²). A brick wall of 250 mm thickness including plaster of 1.0m height is provided
at the end of cantilever fc’ = 17.25 MPa, fy = 300 MPa, Slab thickness of room = 125 mm. Slab
bottom steel in the direction of cantilever is 13mm diameter RSB @ 190 mm center to center
spacing. In determining load, consider all weight that may occur. Use 75mm thick for brick
ballast and 60mm for floor finishes.

2. Design a rectangular tied and spiral column to accept the following service dead and live loads.
Ignore length effects. (Including bar and ties)
PDL = 630 KN Fc’ = 27.60 MPa
PLL = 950 KN Fy = 414 MPa

3. Design an isolated footing to support an interior column 25 cm × 60 cm in cross section that

carries a dead load of 60 tons, a live load of 40 tons, a dead load moment of 15 t.m, and a live
load moment of 10 t.m (service loads and moments). Use fc’ = 250 kg/cm², fy = 4200 kg/cm²,
qall(gross) = 2.0 kg/cm³, Unit Weight of soil = 1.7 t/m³, and Df = 2.0 m.
Note that there is no restriction on foundation projections on any side of the footing.
