3 - Typesof Bridges

The document discusses different types of bridges based on factors like the type of traffic, material and fabrication, structural system, and span type. It provides examples of highway bridges, railway bridges, pedestrian bridges, arch bridges, girder bridges, truss bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and suspension bridges. Key characteristics and considerations for each type are outlined.

Objective of the topic

Types of bridge Types by Kinds of Traffic

Students can identify the type and/or structural Types by Traffic Position
system for a given bridge Types by Material and Fabrication
Types by Structural System
 Considerations for choosing the types of bridge Types by span type
Students can explain the factors that are used in

Arch Bridge
Under compression
Arch action reduces bending moment
Pleasing
High erection cost
Less space beneath the arch

Girder Bridge
•Widely constructed
•Usually used for Short and Medium spans
•Carry load in Shear and Flexural bending
•Economical and long lasting solution for vast
majority of bridges
•Decks and girder usually act together to support the
entire load in highway bridges

Common Materials
Timber
RC T-Girder and Box Girder
Steel Plate Girder or Box girder
Steel truss Girder
Pre-stressed Concrete Girder

Truss Bridge Truss Bridge

 The primary member forces are axial loads
Less deflection and weight
High fabrication and maintenance cost
used widely as the stiffening structure for the
suspension bridges due to its acceptable aerodynamic
behavior

Truss Bridge Cable-stayed Bridge

The cable is commonly constructed from High
Strength wires
•The use of high strength cables in tension leads
to economy in material, weight, and cost..
•As compared with the stiffened suspension
bridge, the cables are straight rather than curved.
As a result, the stiffness is greater
•The cables are anchored to the deck and cause
compressive forces in the deck

Suspension Bridge

The deck is hung from the cable by Hangers constructed

of high strength ropes in tension
The anchorage cost may be high where foundation
material is poor
•The main cable is stiffened either by a pair of stiffening
trusses or by a system of girders at deck level.
•It is the only alternative for spans over 600m
