Fatigue Failure
Fatigue Failure
Stress cycles:
1
cyclic stress range = max min , cyclic stress amplitude a = /2,
mean stress m = (max + min)/2, stress ratio R = min /max,
Amplitude Ratio, A= a / m= (1-R)/(1+R)
Fatigue regimes:

The S-N curve ( or the stress life approach): is used for HCF. This approach
attempts to keep local stresses so low that the crack initiation stage never begins, i.e,
stress and strain everywhere remain in the elastic region and no local yielding occurs
to initiate a crack.

A- for N< 106 a fatigue strength Sf can be defined at any Nf.
- endurance limit Se, is used only for infinite life strength, (N>106).
For steel S e 0.5 ult . (ult.<200Kpsi)
S e 100 Kpsi (ult. 200Kpsi)
B- For Al: S f 510 0.4 ult .

Sf = Sm at N=N1=103 and Sf = Sf at N=N2

a = 0[1 m/ult].
- Gerbers relationship:
a = 0[1 (m/ult)2].
4
- Soderbergs relationship: a = 0(1 m/yp).
In all these relationships, 0 is the fatigue strength in terms of stress amplitude when
m = 0.
