Group Unit Plan

This document outlines a unit plan for teaching high school students about natural disasters. The unit has several learning goals and understandings focused on students learning about the causes and effects of different natural disasters. To assess student learning, students will create either a one page paper and visual representation, or a poster, analyzing how a specific natural disaster impacted an ecosystem or economy. The unit will include lessons on different disasters, labs, research, and a final project where students communicate their understanding through a paper and visual or poster.

STAGE 2 ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE
Performance Tasks: Other Evidence:
Rubric: Students will write a one page paper Notes on each type of natural disaster, Research,
accompanied by a visual representation of how a
natural disaster of their choice effected an
ecosystem per the rubric.
Key Criteria:
The rubric will include:
Creativity is their visual representation organized and done artfully
Content Well describes at least 10 different effects the natural disaster caused.
Research Uses 5 sources to better understand their chosen disaster
Oral Presentation did they present their visual appropriately
Accuracy - was the information accurate

STAGE 3 LEARNING PLAN
Summary of Learning Activities:
Unit lessons:
- There will be a short lecture on a brief over view of each natural disaster
- There will be a lab done illustrating how tornados and earth quakes are caused.
- Students will do a mini report where they study one disaster as a group and make a concept
map.
- Students will be taking home scientific articles to read and annotate on different natural
disasters
- There will be a Socratic seminar on how one common disaster (hurricane Katrina) has effected
the ecosystem on New Orleans, as a precursor to doing their own individual research.

The final project for this unit will be a one page paper that is accompanied by a visual presentation on
a students chosen natural disaster on how this disaster has effected a communitys ecosystem.
Students will present their visual to the class so that they can learn from each others research. The
visual representation and the presentation will be graded via a rubric.

STAGE 3 LEARNING PLAN
Summary of Learning Activities:
Unit lessons:
- We will be learning about the US economy and what does it entail (only the basics)
- There will be a lab designed to teach students how to discuss and interpret information about
the US economy
- Students will learn about statistics and how to calculate mean, median, average, mode, ect.
- Students will do an activity to learn how to interpret statistical data.
- Students will learn how to properly graph data and interpret a graph.

The final project for this unit will be to create a poster comparing a populations economy pre-and-post
a natural disaster of their choice. This poster must include data tables and graphs to illustrate the
changes and well as a short summary defending their data. Students will need to do research in order
to collect all the necessary statistics and the final product will be graded via a rubric
