Coursework 5 ID:
Problem 1. Find the Laplace transform of the function

0 t<2
f (t) =
(t 2)2 t 2

Solution: Since f (t) = u2 (t)(t 2)2 ,

L{f (t)} = L{u2 (t)(t 2)2 }

= e2s L{t2 }
2
= 3 e2s
s

Problem 2. Find the inverse Laplace transform of the function

2(s 1)e2s
G(s) =
s2 2s + 2
Solution:
2(s 1)e2s
F (s) =
s2 2s + 2
2(s 1)e2s
=
(s 1)2 + 1
s
Note that L{cos t} = s2 +1 , so
s1
L{et cos t} =
(s 1)2 + 1
and
(s 1)e2s
L{u2 (t)et2 cos(t 2)} =
(s 1)2 + 1
Therefore,
L1 {F (s)} = 2u2 (t)et2 cos(t 2)

Problem 3. Express the solution of the following initial value problem in terms of a convolution integral:

y + 2 y = g(t), y(0) = 0, y (0) = 1

Solution: Let L{y(t)} = Y (s), applying Laplace transform to both sides of the DE gives

[s2 Y (s) sy(0) y (0)] + 2 Y (s) = L{g(t)}

so we have
(s2 + 2 )Y (s) = L{g(t)} + 1.
Applying by simple algebra gives

L{g(t)} + 1
Y (s) =
s2 + 2
1 1
= 2 + 2 L{g(t)}
s + 2 s + 2
Note that

L{sin t} = ,
s2 + 2
then

L{sin t g(t)} = L{g(t)}.
s2 + 2
Hence,
1 1
y(t) = sin t + sin t g(t)

Z t
1 1
= sin t + sin (t )g( ) d.
