Directional Derivative: Du f (x0 , y0 ) = f (x0 , y0 ) qu

Second Derivative Test:

Suppose (a, b) is a critical point of f and all the second order partial derivatives of f are contin-
uous near (a, b). Let D(x, y) = fxx (x, y)fyy (x, y) (fxy (x, y))2 .

(i) If D(a, b) > 0 and fxx (a, b) > 0, then f has a local minimum at (a, b).
(ii) If D(a, b) > 0 and fxx (a, b) < 0, then f has a local maximum at (a, b).
(iii) If D(a, b) < 0, then f has a saddle at (a, b).
(iv) If D = 0, this gives no conclusion.
