Q.1) A point in a strained material is subjected to tensile stresses x = 180 N/mm2 and y = 120 N/mm2.
Determine the intensities of normal, tangential and resultant stresses on a plane inclined at 30
anticlockwise to the axis of minor stress.
Q.2) The state of stress at a point in a strained material is as shown in Fig. 1. Determine the normal,
tangential and the resultant stress on plane DE. Determine the direction of resultant also.
Q.3) The state of stress at a point is as shown in Fig. 2. Determine the principal stresses and maximum
shear stress. Indicate their planes on a separate sketch.
Q.4) The state of stress in a two dimensionally stressed material is as shown in Fig. 3. Determine the
principal stresses, principal planes and the maximum shear stress. Determine normal and tangential
stresses on plane AC also.
Q.5) A bar of cross section 10 cm2 is acted upon by axial compressive forces of 60 kN applied at each
end of the bar. Using Mohrs circle, determine the normal and shearing stresses on a plane inclined at
30 to the direction of loading.
Q.6) A plane element is subject to the stresses shown in Fig. 4. Using Mohrs circle, determine (a) the
principal stresses and their directions and (b) the maximum shearing stresses and the directions of the
planes on which they occur.
Q.7) Two wooden members of 80mmx120mm uniform rectangular cross section are joined by the
simple glued scarf splice shown (Fig. 5). Knowing that =22 and that the maximum allowable stresses
in the joint are, respectively, 400 kPa in tension (perpendicular to the splice) and 600 kPa in shear
(parallel to the splice), determine the largest centric load P that can be applied.
Q.8) The point on the surface of the cylindrical pressure vessel in Fig. 6 is subjected to the state of
plane stress. Determine the absolute maximum shear stress at this point.
