Meeting Roles:
Toastmaster: (Competent Leader (CL) Projects: 4, 5, 7, 8, 10)
The Toastmaster is a meetings director and host. As the Toastmaster, you will introduce each speaker throughout the program and
greet them at the podium. The role also ensures the meeting is on track for time and upon completion of the meeting reports will close
the meeting.

Speakers: (CL Projects: 4, 5)

A portion of each meeting is centered on those individuals who provide input within speaking roles. The roles include providing the
Inspiration, Humour, "Word of the Day", as well as Table Topics and Prepared Speeches by members who are working on
assignments within the Competent Communicator or Advanced Communicator Manuals.

Table Topics Master (CL Projects: 4, 5, 7) and Table Topics Speaker: (CL Project: 1)
Table Topics gives members who arent assigned a speaking role the opportunity to speak during the meeting. The Table
Topics Master challenges each member with a subject, and the speaker responds with a one to two minute impromptu talk.
This role provides you with an opportunity to practice planning, preparation, organization, time management and facilitation
skills; your preparation and topic selection help train members to quickly organize and express their thoughts in an impromptu
setting.

Evaluations/Reports:
The purpose of the evaluations and reports is to provide feedback to members on activities performed well and opportunities for
improving speeches, as well as how the meetings are organized and run.

General Evaluator: (CL Projects 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10)

Provide feedback on all areas and of the meeting and speakers which have not yet been evaluated using the General
Evaluator Guide. Includes commenting on setup, flow etc of meeting as a whole. This role also leads the evaluation section of
the meeting.

Speech Evaluators: (CL Projects 1, 2, 3, 8)

The purpose of the speech evaluator is to provide feedback to the speaker through the development of critical thinking,
listening, and feedback and motivation skills. Feedback may be provided in written and/or verbal form dependent upon the
requirements of the speech assignment.

Table Topics Evaluator: (No CL Project)

The purpose of the table topics evaluator is to provide feedback to the table topics master and table topics speakers through
the development of critical thinking, listening, and feedback and motivation skills. Feedback is normally provided in verbal
during the evaluation section of the meeting.

Timer: (CL Project 4)

One of the skills Toastmasters practice is expressing a thought within a specific time. As timer you are responsible for
monitoring time for each meeting segment and each speaker. Youll also operate the timing signal, indicating to each speaker
how long he or she has been talking. Serving as timer is an excellent opportunity to practice giving instructions and time
management something we do every day.

Grammarian (CL Projects 1, 2, 3, 4)/Ah Counter: (CL Project 1)

The grammarian introduces the Word of the Day and listens to everyone's word usage. Includes writing down any awkward
use or misuse of language (incomplete sentences, sentences that change direction in midstream, incorrect grammar, etc).
Also make note of correct, colourful, creative, and effective use of language. Note any word or sound used as a crutch by any
speaker. Words may be inappropriate interjections such as and, well, but, so and you know. Sounds may be ah, um or er.
This role is an excellent opportunity to practice your listening skills.
