Configuring - Define the data mapping, design correlation, and design comparison.
Importing - Import the SmartPlant P&ID and PDMS design data or ISO model data into
SmartPlant P&ID Design Validation. This ensures proper mapping and filtering of the native
data through predefined mapping definitions.
Comparing - After the data is imported, corresponding items at different levels are
correlated automatically using the pre-defined correlation definition. This step of
auto-correlation provides a visual link of the corresponding elements. This link allows you to
navigate and visually verify the data about the corresponding design items. After the
auto-correlation, you can compare the attributes and topology of the design data using a
hierarchical and graphical view.
The last part of the comparison requires that you resolve any inconsistencies in the design
items using respective correlation command to resolve the inconsistency. Identify
inconsistent design elements, and add resolution comments. Compile the comments and
send them to the respective designer for resolution.
Reporting - Generate reports of approvals made during the design validation.
The example below illustrates how the SmartPlant P&ID Design Validation Utility can be used
for validating 2D and 3D data.
Four sample mapping files are delivered with the product at [Install Folder]\SmartPlant\P&ID
Design Validation\Mappers folder:
DataMapper.xml - You can use this file when importing PDMS data.
ISOMapper.xml - You can use this file when importing ISO data.
SppidMapper-PDMS.xml and SppidMapper-ISO.xml - You can use these files when
importing SmartPlant P&ID data.
SppidMapper - PDMS.xml is used to compare SmartPlant P&ID data against PDMS
data.
SppidMapper - ISO.xml is used to compare SmartPlant P&ID data against ISO data.

Only those Attributes which are specified in the XML Element of a particular hierarchy
level node are imported into the software. For example, as shown above, only the NAME
Attribute of PIPE object will be imported into the software.
For example, if you define attributes such as Bore and PSPE in the
CommonAttributesBelowThisLevel XML element of the PIPE node, the same attributes will
be applied to all the consecutive nodes in the hierarchy.
DefaultAttributeBelowThisLevel - Defines all the default attributes that are not
present in 2D/3D data that you want to import into the software. You can add user-defined
attributes and their values using this XML element. This XML element helps you define the
default attributes of all consecutive hierarchy level nodes, without having to define them
individually.
DefaultAttributes - Defines all the default attributes that are not present in 2D/3D data
that you want to import into the software. You can add user-defined attributes and their
values using this XML element. This XML element helps you define the default attributes for
a particular hierarchy level node.
In the previous example, the default attribute PipingComponentType has been defined in
the DefaultAttributes XML element under the Globe-Valve node.

Mapping Attribute Values (on page 19)
Explanation: Removes the last five characters from the pipeline reference attribute value. If
the pipeline reference attribute value is 150-SV-21016-A300, then it is modified to
150-SV-21016.
DeleteNCharsFromNthPosition - Deletes the given number of characters from the
given position in the attribute value.
Syntax: <Attribute-value-map DeleteNCharsFromNthPosition =No of
characters to be deleted, position from which deletion should start >
Example: <Pipeline-Reference-value-map DeleteNCharsFromNthPosition
=6,1 />
Explanation: Removes the first six characters of the pipeline reference attribute. If the
pipeline reference attribute value is 050-L-01002-A300, then it is modified to 01002-A300.
Explanation: In the above example, the value after the colon (:) is extracted as the NPD, and
mm is appended at the end.
Ignored Objects
IgnoredObjects - Specifies the objects under the required hierarchy level that the software
ignores during import. Using the following syntax, you can specify which objects for the software
to ignore while importing:
<IgnoredObjects>
<Name of the object to be ignored like Flange>
</IgnoredObjects>
As shown in the example below, the STRUCTURE and RESTRAINT objects in the Zone
hierarchy are to be ignored.
Using the following syntax, you can also ignore objects based on specific values of one or more
properties. For example, the following XML entry ignores all the piperuns with the PipeRunClass
property value set to Instrument or the Name property value set to Drain or Exhaust.
<IgnoredObjects>
<PipeRun PipeRunClass="Instrument" Name="Drain!Exhaust">
</IgnoredObjects>
Use an exclamation mark (!) as the separator character for multiple values of a single
property.
