Mosquito Coil Using Calamansi
Mosquito Coil Using Calamansi
Mosquitoes are one of the major problems in our society because it carries a disease
called dengue. Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of an infected female
Aedes mosquito (World Health Organization, 2016). The researchers wanted to contribute
to the handling of this disease through the control of the population of mosquito-carrying
borne diseases and developed this topic to make an organic mosquito coil. Mosquito
repellents are essentially required these days. Mosquito coils are one of the cheapest and
effective ways of avoiding them, but these coils are made up of chemicals which can harm
our health. So we thought about making a substitute mosquito coil that is not harmful to
our health and that is the calamansi coil a natural and environmental friendly coil.
An expert has said that smoke emitted from one mosquito repellent coil is
equivalent to those 100 cigarettes, thus causing harm to large number of people in India.
The damage done to lungs by one mosquito coil is equivalent to the damage done by 100
cigarettes. This was according to a recent study conducted in Malaysia. Based on the
previous study, it is proven that the charcoal is capable as a base material reduces mosquito
coil that emits of toxins (US National Library of Medicine, National Institute of Health).
In addition, the neem tree leaves were proven as a repelling larvae and adult. Though, many
Filipinos use a mosquito repellant without knowing the bad effect of it in their health.
According to different study, they prefer to have or to try some organic mosquito coil. The
effectiveness should be tested but people should consider many things for us to prevent
diseases.

This study aims to produce an effective and purely natural mosquito coil using
mosquito coil using citrofortunella microcarpa. Furthermore ,to know if the product is
sufficient in eliminating mosquitoes and discovering the range of the ability in killing
mosquitoes.
Citrofortunella Microcarpa waste. This project tackles on making a mosquito coil that is
made up of natural ingredients that is not harmful to human health specifically calamansi
and not any other. The study will limited on the use of calamansi as a mosquito coil that is
made up of natural ingredients not harmful to human health. Moreover, this study tackles
the protection of human beings against mosquito bites that cause diseases. Making a
mosquito coil out of natural ingredients may protect every individuals health, especially
from mosquito bites. These statements of the problem may help to develop the organic
mosquito coil. First question is to know what will be the effect of the coil made by
available in the market the coil made by Citrofortunella Microcarpa. The findings of this
study will help to inhibit dengue which is the common problem in the society now a day

The study was conducted in a period of month and couple of weeks, from August
05 to September 22, 2017. The study was done in the laboratory of the Sto. Domingo
National Trade School. Conditions were kept constant for all tests.

MATERIALS AND METHODS
the Sto. Domingo National Trade School was utilized in the research with proper
permission. The tools and equipments used are blender, Oven, Knife, measuring cups,
There are two main organic ingredients of coil and that is the calamansi waste, and
the neem tree leaves. The researchers collected the calamansi waste within the campus
canteen of Sto. Domingo National Trade School and the neem tree leaves collected also
within their school. After collecting it, researchers start to prepare the other ingredients
such as charcoal, corn starch, gum powder, wood shavings and some equipment.
1 kl Calamansi waste were cut into pieces and uses the blender to refine it and
added 30 mL of water, rather the 440 grams of the neem tree leaves that are collected within
the school campus. After that the 880 grams of wood shavings were filtered using strainer.
Furthermore the 500 grams charcoal was pulverized. Then researchers mixed all the
ingredients and prepare the temperature of the oven about 250 Degree Celsius and waited
for 15 minutes for the pressure, foregoing all the ingredients were mixed in appropriate
quantities and then placed it in heating area and wait for 30 minutes until it will mold,
moreover allowed it cool for about 10 minutes before uncover the foil.

Testing the Effectivity of Calamansi-Neem Mosquito Coil
To test the effectiveness of mosquito coil, the researchers prepare five (5) mosquitoes in
every three (3) plastic containers with the size of 3x10 inch. The one-inch Calamansi-
Neem Mosquito Coil lit, placed inside of the plastic container and observed.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
There are two different types of treatment applied; the Calamansi-Neem Mosquito coil and
the mixture of wood shavings and the starch. In every treatments there are three test
applied. First test using calamansi-neem coil, four (4) mosquitoes demise and the other 1
losing his strength after 7 minutes. In the second test around 11 minutes; the entire
mosquito died while in the last test all mosquitoes died in the 12 minutes. The last
treatments are the mixture of wood shavings and starch. The mosquitoes are tested three
times for about 15 minutes, and in every test there was the same outcome that 2 mosquitoes
died.

CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION
The Philippines has made dengue a modifiable disease since 1958. As a tropical
Based on the data collected, the organic mosquito coil is an effective repellent that lessen
the amount of mosquito bite. Calamansi peelings, neem tree leaves, gum poder, starch,
wood shavings and charcoal are not harmful in human health. After the trials and errors in
testing those organic coil, the researchers conclude that the properties contain by organic
material contribute in protecting from dengue. Therefore, the development of this mosquito
For future researches, the researcher would like to be able to have a larger sample
Identification of air pollutants caused by the developed mosquito coil would also further
