2.1 Kinds of Statistical Data
Data
refers to facts or figures from which conclusions
can be drawn.
Information collected, organized, analyzed, and
interpreted by statisticians.

1. Qualitative and quantitative data
Qualitative data classificatory data
ex: yes or no response, gender, civil status,
ratings such as good, satisfactory, very
satisfactory
Quantitative data either counts or measures
ex: number of students, height

2. Primary and secondary data
Primary data refers to information gathered
directly from an original source, or which are
based on direct or first-hand experience
ex: diaries, autobiography
Secondary data refer to information taken
from published or unpublished data which were
previously gathered by other individuals or
agencies (second-hand data)
ex: books, newspapers, magazines, reports

2.2 Methods of Data Collection
1. Survey method
desired information is obtained through personal
interview or by distributing questionnaires to
respondents.
2. Observation method
desired information is obtained by observing and
recording the behavior of persons, organizations,
etc. but only at the time of occurrence.
3. Experimental method
used when the objective is to determine the cause
and effect relationship of certain variables under
controlled conditions. 5

1. Textual Presentation
better to use if only 3 figures or less are involved
useful manner of presenting limited amount of
information

1. Tabular Presentation
Condensing classified data and arranging them
in a table.
Two Types of Tables
1. General or reference table primary purpose is to
present data in such a way that individual items may
easily be found by a reader; often placed in an
appendix.
2. Summary or text table usually small in size and
designed to guide the reader in analyzing the data;
usually accompanies a text discussion.
