It was the deadliest earthquake to hit China since 1950 and caused widespread damage across a 500,000 square kilometer area. As of April 2009, the earthquake had killed over 69,000 people, injured nearly 375,000, and left over 179,000 missing. The direct economic losses from the earthquake totaled over 845 billion yuan. It was the worst earthquake in China since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949.

Caption1: At 14:28 on May 12, 2008, 04 seconds, in Sichuan County of Wenchuan (31 degrees north
latitude, 103.4 degrees east longitude), the magnitude of the earthquake was 8. The magnitude,

founding of the People's Republic of China. Since the August 15, 1950 Tibet earthquake magnitude is
metok (level 8.5) and the 2001 Kunlun Mountains earthquake (8.1) after the third earthquake, directly
affected area of 100 thousand square kilometers.
