Lesson Plans

1. Describe the Class:

First grade class of twenty students. Five ELL students, three students with
learning disabilities.

2. Subject/Skill:

Math lesson using shapes for patterns.

3. Objective(s):

Students will be attentive as I show a few short videos on various musical


patterns.
Students will understand that patterns can be shapes or sounds.
Students will learn how to create patterns using foam shapes.
Students will learn the meaning of patterns.
Students will be able to add to their patterns to make them longer.
Students will learn how to create their own patterns.

4. Procedures:

Read the book The Shape of Things written by Dayle Ann Dodds to the
class while encouraging them to guess the next shapes and patterns are
going to be coming up as we read the story.
Make our own style of patterns by clapping and patting our legs. I will
start with a pattern and then I will ask the students to finish it.
Break the class into small groups and have them take turns making sound
patterns and having the group finish the patterns.
Hand out foam shapes to the groups.
Have each group make patterns together using the foam shapes.
Allow students to view other groups patterns.
Have students show what theyve learned about patterns by completing a
worksheet using shapes and colors.

5. Materials:

Different shaped and colored foam pieces.

6. Grouping Structures:

Groups will be groups of five, assuring that there are bilingual children in the
groups with the ELL students and assisting students with learning disabilities.

7. Modifications:
Students will be allowed to choose their own groups but might need to be
regrouped upon students who might not work together or due to not having
bilingual students in a group that requires one.

8. Assessment:

We will go over the worksheet as a class using highlighters to correct and


patterns we may have done incorrectly, making sure an excessive amount of
patterns werent done incorrectly.
