History of Lithium

Johan August Arfwedson discovered lithium in 1817 while analyzing the mineral spodumene, naming the new element after the Greek word for stone. Lithium was first introduced to modern medicine in 1843 and isolated as a free metal in 1855. In the 20th century, lithium began to be used commercially and found important industrial uses, including in grease production during World War II and NASA space suits in the late 1960s.

History of Lithium

1817 A Swedish scientist, Johan August Arfwedson discovered lithium when he

analyzed the content of a mineral called spodumene. Since the new element had
been found in chunks of spodumene ore, Arfwedson called it "lithium," from the
Greek word for stone.

1843 - Lithium introduced into modern medicine for treatment of kidney stones and
to dissolve uric acid deposits associated with gout

1855 Lithium first isolated as a free metal by scientist William Thomas Brande

1920 1950 - 7-Up brand soft drink contained lithium citrate and was marketed as
a hangover cureIt takes the ouch out of grouch

1923 First commercial production of lithium by Metallgesellschaft AG

1941 - Lithium grease was the first major industrial use for lithiumlithium grease
was a strategic advantage for the Allies in WWII

1942 Lithium hydride found to be a compact, lightweight source of hydrogen ideal

for use in military emergency signaling balloons. One pound of lithium hydride
reacts with seawater to generate 45 cubic feet of hydrogen.

1942, Lithium Corporation of America founded by the US government for

production of Lithium 7 for the Hydrogen bomb

1967 1972 - Lithium hydroxide rebreather systems were used in the Apollo
Mission space suits
