Introduction to Finance and controlling

SAP FICO Stands for FI (Financial Accounting) and CO (Controlling). SAP FICO is the
important module of ERP and both FI and CO modules stores the financial transactions data.

SAP Financial Accounting(FI)

SAP FI module as the term suggests deals in managing financial transactions within
enterprises. This financial accounting module helps employees to manage data involved in any
financial and business transactions in a unified system. This module functions very well for
reporting requirements. The SAP FI module is very flexible and functions well in any type of
economic situation. Be it a smaller organization or a larger organization, SAP implementation
helps in consolidating data for diverse business transactions and legal requirements. Financial
Accounting module helps one to get real-time financial position of an enterprise in the market.
SAP FI incorporates with other SAP modules such as SAP SD, SAP MM, SAP PP, Payroll and
more for better work results.

SAP Controlling (CO)

SAP CO module is another important SAP modules offered to enterprises. The controlling
module supports in the process works of planning, reporting and monitoring operations of
businesses. It involves methods to view and organize costs that are required for financial
reporting. Controlling module enables one to plan, track, perform and report about costs.
Controlling includes managing and configuring master data that covers cost elements, cost
centers, profit centers, internal orders, and functional area and so on.

It is a legal independent entity for which general ledger master data extended or created
to carry out day to day activities of the business transactions.Now, you know about
organizational structure of SAP FI (Financial Accounting).

Here we have to create a code for the company. Company code is nothing but part of
the organisational structure, In a company code we will take the reports of only that
particular code balance sheet reports.

Define credit control Area

Credit control area is used to check credit limit for customers. We can assign one credit control
areas to one or more company codes.

Credit control area is used for credit management in the applications components for Sales and
Distribution and Accounts receivable. Credit management be a centralized or decentralized. If it
centralized then all company codes can use one credit control area, in case of decentralized each
company code should has individual credit control area.

Define Business Area

Business areas are used to distinguish business transactions of an organization at

unit/branch level. For example: A construction company has one company code but it has various
projects so each project will be defined as business area.

While booking transactions business area to specify so it is possible to derive reports

based on business area. It is not possible to input business area for all the transactions hence
business area concept is not much in use.

Business area not assigned to any company code so if an organization has multiple
company codes then all can use the same business area. It is also possible to maintain business
area as an element in master data like cost center, WBS element, internal order, etc.

Financial Global Settings

It includes following steps and their definitions are as given below.

Define Fiscal Year

Define Posting Periods
Define Field Status Variant
Define Tolerance group for Users
Define Document Types and Assign Number ranges
Define Posting Keys
Assigning all above to Company Code.

A period of usually 12 months, for which the company produces financial statements and takes
inventory.
A fiscal year need not correspond to the calendar year. Under certain circumstances, fiscal years
containing fewer than 12 months are also permitted (short fiscal year).

Definition:
The fiscal year variant is used to define the fiscal year.

You can define the following using a fiscal year variant:

o How many posting periods are in a fiscal year

o How many special periods you require
o How the system determines the posting periods when posting.

In the definition, you allocate your posting periods to the calendar year.

Allocation control requires the same number of posting periods in the company code and
in the assigned controlling area.

This means that the number of posting periods in the fiscal year variants must be the
same in the company code and in the controlling area. The period limits for the two fiscal
year variants must also coincide.

You must define which fiscal year variant is to be used for each company code. To do
this, you must define the appropriate fiscal year variant (to contain no more than 16
periods).

are then updated for this period.

Definition:

This describes the specifications for a posting period (for example, beginning and end).
Each company code refers to exactly one variant. Therefore, as many company codes as you
require can use the same variant.
