READING COMPREHENSION

Notes

1 Students must read the summary question first (Question 31) before reading the
passage in Section C. The summary question normally allows them to get some ideas of
what the passage is all about. It is an advantage for weak students to know the general
idea of the passage before they read it. Student should not write the summary first but
after reading the summary question, they should read the passage and answer all the
comprehension questions.
2. Students must read the passage paragraph by paragraph. After reading each paragraph,
they should read and try to answer the question that is based on that paragraph. By
doing so, the students will be more focused in finding the correct answer.
3. Students should identify the keywords in each question. The keywords will be clues for
them to find the correct answer in the passage.
4. Students should only copy out the sentence from the text once they have identified the
sentence containing the answer. Of course, pronouns such as I, me, mine, my, our, us
and ours must be changed accordingly.
5. Students must be able to differentiate a word and a phrase. So, if there is a question
asking for a word, you must only write a word for the answer. On the other hand, if you
are supposed to write a phrase, write down a group of words which is not a complete
sentence such as uncomplicated deIivery or indispensable part of our lives. Similarly, if
the question requires writing words as the answer, copy a part of a sentence. Students
must aware of the differences of these terms: word, words, phrase and sentence.

BASED ON ONE OF THE NOVEL YOU HAVE LEARNT, WRITE ABOUT AN IMPORTANT MORAL VALUE. SUPPORT
YOUR ANSWER WITH THE EVIDENCE FROM THE TEXT.

I choose Dear Mr. Kilmer novel by Anne Schraff. One of the moral values that I have
learnt from the novel is caring and it showed by Richard.

Richard is caring about living things. He shows his caring when he deliberately missed
shot the dear because he taught killing animal would make him sad. Caring about living things
is important moral value because we must appreciate nature and be kind towards animals.

He also cares at Hannah when he showed his kindness and pity. He became the only
person who signed the sympathy and regret card in his class. He also asked permission from
Mrs. Hansen to send the card by himself although Harry and Abner tried to stop him. We must
have humanity towards others and help those who are in trouble.

He is a caring person especially to his father and sister. He helped his father at the farm
by collecting eggs and gave hay to the horses. He helped his sister by doing house chores.
Caring towards family members is a must because it can strengthen our family bond.

To sum up, caring is the most important moral value showed by Richard. It is a good
example for teenagers to follow and implement in daily life.
