Chapter 1/2: Equations & Inequalities, Functions
 Complex Numbers

Sum and Difference Operations

(a+bi)+(c+di)= (a+c)+(b+d)i
(a+bi)-(c+di)= (a-c)+(b-d)I
Conjugates
Ex) 1+i--> 1-i
 Even/Odd Function
-Even: f(-x)=f(x)
-Odd: f(-x)= -f(x)
 Rational Functions
1.holes: if any factor in numerator and denominator cancel out
2.y-intercept: make x=0. plug into function--> (0,y)
3.zeroes: set numerator=0
4.asymptotes:
-V.A= whatever makes denominator =zero
-H.A= if power is the SAME, leading coeff./leading coeff.// if power is bottom heavy, y=0// if power is top heavy, NO H.A--,O.A
-O.A= if power is top heavy, divide numerator by denominator.
 Combinations of Functions

Equivalent to-->

Ex:
1. Given

 and

 find

Solution: Remember that the

 notation is the same as

. So we will go to our ffunction

 and replace the x with the g function

. This means we now have

2. Express the function h(x)=1/(x-2)2 as a composition of two functions
Solution: realize that f(x)= 1/x2 , =x-2
Then h(x)= 1/(x-2)2= (x-2)-2 = f(x-2)=f(g(x))
Inverse Functions
Ex: f(x)= 5/x-2
Is the function h(x)=(5/x)+2 an inverse function of f(x)?

f(h(x))= f((5/x)+2)= 5/((5/x)+2)-2 = 5/(5/x)=x 

Yes, it is because,
f-1(f(x))=x
f(f-1(x))=x
Quadratic Function
Standard Eq.  f(x) = a(h-k)2+k
Vertex: (h,k)
 Buf if given in polynomial form// x-int of Vertex: -b/2a
To find x-int: solve the polynomial function for x.

Leading Coefficient Test

-states that if power is ODD and leading coefficient is negative:

-states that if power is ODD and leading coefficient is positive:

-states that if power is EVEN and leading coefficient is positive:

-states that if power is EVEN and leading coefficient is negative:

Polynomial and Synthetic Division

First, write the coefficients ONLY inside an upside-down division symbol:

Make sure you leave room inside, underneath the row of coefficients, to write another row of numbers later.
 Put the test zero, x = 1, at the left:

Take the first number inside, representing the leading coefficient, and carry it down, unchanged, to below the division symbol:

   Multiply this carry-down value by the test zero, and carry the result up into the next column:

   Add down the column:

  Multiply the previous carry-down value by the test zero, and carry the new result up into the last column:

Add down the column:
This last carry-down value is the remainder.

 Exponential Functions

Compound interest per year:

( rn ) nt
A=P 1+
Compound continuously : A=P ert
t
1
Half-Life: A=P( )half −life
