Eee1001 - Basic Electrical and Electronics Engineering: Module I - DC Circuits

This document discusses the maximum power transfer theorem in DC circuits. It explains that maximum power is transferred to the load when the load resistance equals the Thevenin's resistance as seen from the load. It also states that for a given circuit, the Thevenin voltage and resistance are fixed, and varying the load resistance will result in maximum power delivery when the load resistance equals the Thevenin resistance. The document provides an example circuit and asks the reader to find the load resistance value for maximum power transfer and calculate the maximum power.

Maximum Power Transfer Theorem

Maximum power is transferred to the load when the load resistance

equals the Thevenins resistance as seen from the load (RL = RTh).

The Thevenin equivalent is useful in nding the maximum power a linear circuit
can deliver to a load. We assume that we can adjust the load resistance RL. If
the entire circuit is replaced by its Thevenin equivalent except for the load,
as shown in Fig., the power delivered to the load is
For a given circuit, VTH and RTH are xed. By varying the load resistance RL
the power delivered to the load varies.
Power is small for small or large values of RL but maximum for some value
of RL between 0 and . We now want to show that this maximum power
occurs when RL is equal to RTh. This is known as the maximum power
theorem.
Find the value of RL for maximum power transfer in the Fig. Find the
maximum power.
