This document contains 4 questions regarding cooling load estimation for air conditioning systems. Question 1 asks the reader to determine the volume of air supplied, latent heat load, and cooling load of an air washer system given indoor and outdoor conditions. Question 2 asks for apparatus dew point temperature, conditioned air parameters, and refrigeration load given room and outdoor conditions mixed with return and fresh air. Question 3 asks for apparatus dew point and total heat load given indoor and outdoor conditions for a conference room with occupancy, lighting, and infiltration loads. Question 4 asks for dew point temperature and plant capacity given design indoor and outdoor conditions for an office with occupancy, lighting, solar, and infiltration loads mixed with fresh and return air.

Cooling Load Estimation

Q1/ An air conditioned space is maintained at 25 oC DBT and 50% RH. The
outdoor conditions are 40 oC DBT and 25 oC WBT. The sensible heat
load in the space is 24.5 kW. The air supplied to the conditioned space as
saturated air at 10 oC . the equipment consists of an air washer. The air
entering the air washer contains 25% outdoor air and 75% recalculated
air. Determine
a. Volume of air supplied to the space per minute.
b. Latent heat load in the space
c. Cooling load of air washer.

Q2/ the room design conditions are 25 oC DBTand 50% RH, when outside air
design conditions are 43 oC DBT and 27 oC WBT. The room sensible
and latent heat loads are 20 kW and 5 kW respectively. The 80% return
air is mixed 20% fresh air and then passed through a cooling coil of 0.15
bypass factor. Determine: -
a. Apparatus dew point temperature
b. Conditioned of air leaving cooling coil

c. Air flow rate into the room in m3

d. Flow rate of fresh air and recalculated air in m3/min
e. Refrigeration load of air conditioning plant.
Ans: (a. 9.5 oC b. 11.8 oC DBT and 11 oC WBT c. 65 m3/min
d. 14.3 m3/min & 54.5 m3/min e. 33 kW)
Q3/A conference room for seating 100 persons is to be maintained at 22 oC
DBT and 60% RH. The outdoor conditions are 40 oC DBT and 27 oC
WBT. The various loads in the auditorium are as follows:
Sensible and latent heat load per person 80 W & 50 W respectively
Lights and fans= 15000 W
Sensible heat gain through glass, walls ceiling = 15000 W
Air infiltration = 20 m3/min
Fresh air are mixed before entering the cooling coils. The bypass factor of
the coil is 0.1. determine
a. apparatus dew point temperature
b. ground total heat load
Ans: (a. 11.5 oC b. 71.7 kW)

Q4/ The flow data relates to the office air conditioning plant having maximum
seating capacity of 25 occupants:
Outside design conditioned =34 oC DBT and 28 oC WBT
Inside design conditioned =24 oC DBT and 50% RH
Solar heat gain=9120 W
Latent heat gain per occupant=105 W
Sensible heat gain =90 W
Lighting load =2300 W
Sensible heat load from other sources =11630 W
Infiltration load =14 m3/min
