Lesson Plan 2

1) The lesson plan aims to teach students about cellular division through creating digital posters about mitosis and meiosis. 2) Students will be assessed based on a rubric for their Glogster posters explaining stages of cell division. 3) The lesson involves an anticipatory drawing activity, dividing students into groups to research and create Glogster posters, and presenting the posters to the class.

Lesson Planning

Waynesburg University

Writing the lesson plan:

Translating thoughts into a plan of action
_____________________________________________
Pennsylvania Academic Standard(s) addressed during this lesson:
(Provide Standard number and statement)
• 3.3.10.C: Describe how genetic material is inherited and expressed.
• Compare and contrast the function of mitosis and meiosis.
• 3.3.4.B: Know that living things are made up of parts that have specific functions.

Lesson Objective(s) :
(Stated in observable and measurable terms)
• The students will explain the causes for cellular division.
• The students will describe the process of cellular division.
• The students will differentiate between mitosis and meiosis.
• The students will create a Glogster for a stage in cell division.

Assessment Plan:
(What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?)
• The students will be assessed on their Glogster poster. Please see attached rubric for more
information.

Materials:
• Biology book.
• Notebook.
• Writing utensil.
• Index card.
• Computer access.

Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs:

• For a student who is visually impaired the teacher will modify the text/background color
and size to accommodate for the students.

Enrichment Techniques:
• The students will be asked to develop a short research essay who discovered cellular
division.
Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL
students have access to and are able to participate in the lesson):
• The students will work in pairs to complete this project. This will ensure that the students
have gathered the correct information concerning the topic and can successfully create a
digital poster.

Lesson Presentation
Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set:
• The students will be given a index card at the being of the class. The students will be asked
to draw an image of the first thing that comes to their mind when a teacher says a word.
The students will be given a few minutes to draw their picture. Each student will share
their drawing with the class, and will also provide a brief explanation of their drawing.
The words used in this activity will be 'meiosis” and “mitosis.”

Detailed Teaching Sequence:

(Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted
statements are preferred)
• The students will complete the anticipatory set.
• The students will be divided into groups (2 members per group).
• The students will be assigned a stage in cellular division.
• The students will create an outline for their presentation.
• The students will go to a computer to begin creating their poster..
• The students will save their work to the desktop.
• The students will save their work as a PDF.
• The students will upload their file on Scribd.com (the presentations will be uploaded to
the classroom website).
• The students will present their posters to the class.
• If possible, the students will print their posters (the posters will be displayed around the
room).
• The students will present their posters to the class.
• The class will ask questions to the group presenting.
• The students will make sure that all of their materials are in the proper place before
leaving class.

Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities

• The students will be asked to create a digital poster using Glogster.com. The poster should
show a basic understanding of the content through the utilization of images and graphics.
The students may use images from the web, or bring photos to scan onto the computer.
The students will be graded on the accuracy of the content presented and the information
that they learned from the project.

Closure:
• If the students are not completed with their poster, the students will save their materials to
the desktop.
• The students will make sure that they have closed all internet browsers.
• The students will clean up their workspace.
• The students will have the opportunity to ask questions to the teacher concerning their
project.
